Secondary schools independent? Free? Manchester area

Hello, my son is 12. I lived in Manchester for a few years long ago and miss it. I'd like to move back and wonder if we sell up we might be able to afford an independent school even if we can't find the right state school for him. Ideally I'd like somewhere that's got a strong pastoral element, not too religious, maybe something like first name terms with the teachers, as I think this generates a sense of mutual respect. I don't know anything about free schools but maybe there is something there? Probably south Manchester area, but will go to where the right school is. Does anyone have an suggestions? He's a very bright, laid back boy who functions best with happy jolly encouragement, rather than strong discipline. Thanks for your help!

I don't know much about Manchester Local Authority schools, and you'll struggle finding a school place for a Y8 pupil at the best schools anyway, but you can't go far wrong with Trafford schools, especially if you can get your DC into a Grammar. Look around schools, different schools suit different DC, and you can't really tell until you visit.
