Glasgow secondary schools

We are moving from Argyll to Glasgow (scary!). Our 2 DS have gone to a small village school so far. We are about to apply for a place at independent schools in Glasgow and could use help, advice, insights into the process?

Also appreciate leads on any good tutors who may have helped others thru, especially TGA or HSOG.

My dd applied for both TGA and HSOG. We did not tutor her in any way for the entrance exams as we wanted to present a true picture of her. She failed the maths part of the HSOG but got into TGA.

The HSOG is focused soley on exam results. After my DD sat the exam she and I were invited for seperate interviews. I was told my daughter had been unsuccessful but she was given the impression by her interviewer that she was still being considered! I felt this process was a bit harsh.

The process at TGA, on the other hand, is far more open. My DD and I were initially allowed to visit for 2 hours during the day when we were shown round all the school and allowed into the classrooms to watch lessons in progress. At a later date my DD was interviewed with me present by both the rector and headteacher of prep school. Then my daughter sat the exam.

That said, the TGA is not an easy option. It has very high expectations. Also my dd has found the behaviour of some of the pupils far more challenging than those of her previous large urban primary school. She is working very hard though but has preferred to keep her old friends rather than make many new ones at TGA

Thx lagera. Appreciate your insights. Did u apply at Transitus or s1? My older DS is good at Maths...I was hoping that would excuse poorer English skills. I guess not from your experience.

I have clearly underestimated the interview too....do they ask academic questions?
