East Devon?

Hello everyone,

I'd be really grateful for some advice. We are interested in moving to Devon with our two LOs who are 2 and 4. Ideally my husband would occasionally be able to come up to London for the day to work. He'd need to get the train and be in London by 9am. Would he be able to do that from anywhere in Devon?

Also, we are being very romantic and desperately looking for the 'perfect' village.

We'd like:

  • Lovely village - I always think of a Miss Marple type place - quintessentially pretty and English
  • Preschool/nursery
  • Primary school
  • Shop
  • Pub
  • Train station not essential

We have found a village of our dreams (Stoke Gabriel), but are just wondering if that is simply too far and we need to stay a bit closer to London.

Any help very gratefully received.

Bee

Otterton is a lovely village, but it's about 30-35 minutes drive from Honiton train station.
Woodbury is great. You could get the train to London from Exeter.
Lympstone has a station & you would change trains at Exeter.

Many thanks - will look those all up!

I like all the villages along the river Otter ie East Budleigh, Otterton, Colaton Raleigh, Newton Poppleford, Tipton St John. People who work occasionally in London drive to Exeter (Paddington) or Honiton (Waterloo) The Paddington route tends to be a bit more expensive but an hour quicker.

There are good pre-schools at East Budleigh and Newton Pop
There is a nursery at Bicton College which most people use.
Village shops at East Budleigh, Colaton Raleigh, Newton Pop (also Post Office).
Pubs at all villages!

If you are house hunting look at village notice boards and parish mags to see what is on for families in that village. There is a lot going on and most of it is organised by the local community eg toddler groups, concerts, kids parties, easter egg hunt, mums meet ups at pub. The village hall is your friend!

Many thanks for all the recommendations - that's really helpful.

Kind regards

Sorry i saw this sooo late like a whole year but hopefully you found what you needed. I currently like in America but own a small farm in Sidbury, Sidmouth just minutes from Honiton. The Sid Valley is one of the most beautiful areas around with some of the best schools & people

Thanks wurselgummidge! We're still in London, dithering over where to go. Devon is high up the list though as it's so lovely.

As a 'Devonian' I highly recommend the area for living and bringing up children.
I work in Somerset which is also lovely, Taunton has some beautiful surrounding countryside and fantastic schools close to the town centre.
I hope this helps, and please feel free to ask any further questions. :)
