Deferred entry into reception summer born child.

I have a boisterous august born boy. I am keen to keep him at home until he has just turned 5, and then start reception.

Local schools not responding positively so far...

Does anyone know of any primary schools in Bristol who support deferred entry for summer borns into reception??

I don't know Bristol, but I can recommend the Facebook Group Flexible Admission for Summberborns. I very sympathetic group with a listing of who/where success has happened, sharing advice, legal documents and support you in whatever happens. Good luck,

Whereabouts in Bristol are you OP?
The only family I know that managed to do this had an August born dd with severe special needs.

If you defer entry till your son is 5 he will start yr1 in September and will have missed out reception all together. It may also be an in year application so you may find you don't get a place at the schools you wanted. Have you spoken to the lea for advice?

Thee are plenty august born boisterous boys in school, I wouldn't delay starting school for a year because of it. It is completely normal. Missing reception unless you can home school may make it more diffcult not less to start school

Or you may find some of the private schools are more flexible

School places in Bristol are very tight and fiercely won, in general. So unless you're prepared to move, you need to work with the school you're likely to get a place in. No point finding a school who is happy to defer, when you wouldn't get a place there anyway through normal admissions.

I do think that schools have to allow you to defer entry within the Reception year, and hold the place for you. It shouldn't be a problem, as I believe it's your right. However if you want to defer the whole year, and start in Y1 then they don't have to hold a place, you'll be applying for a Y1 spot, and you may struggle to find one.

We have deferred our June born boy so he is starting in reception next year rather than this year - St Bons in Bishopston were supportive of this and we are delighted that he now has another year of childhood before joining the treadmill! School admissions in Bristol need a letter of support from the school and then ok apply again re following year. I know of other people deferring for a year at Ashley Down Brunel Fields and at Westbury on Trym academy - good luck!! (Ps There are of course lots of summer born children in very year and we know our son would have been "fine" but from our perspective another year of play could never be a negative)
