Independent Booksellers Week is now in its eighth year, taking place from 28th June - 5th July 2014 to mark a true celebration of independent bookshops nationwide and the important part they play in their communities.
IBW gives parents the perfect chance to help their children discover more about their local bookshop and to encourage them develop a life-long love of browsing and buying books!
Wimbledon Books & Music, in Wimbledon Village, is the only independent bookshop in Merton. To celebrate IBW, Kathlyn, has put together the shop's top-six recommended summer reads for all the family:
Shouty Arthur by Angie Morgan (under 5s)
It is a delightfully illustrated picture book about siblings Edith & Arthur who set off to find the wildlife that Edith has been reading about in her book. Fun and playful, with animals to find on every page, this picture book is a gem.
Baddies, Beasties and a Sprinkling of Crumbs! by Tracey Corderoy, illustrated by Ali Pye. (Ages 6 to 9)
Siblings Martha, Otto and Scarlett Crumb live with their absent minded inventor father Henrig and an assortment of his inventions (of which there are illustrations sprinkled throughout the book). When the siblings find out that their father could be in danger from the Unstoppables they set out to protect him. Great use of language and illustration combine to make this an engaging story that will have you cheering on the Crumb Family.
The Letter For The King by Tonke Dragt translated from Dutch by Laura Watkins. (Ages 10+)
Wonderful old-fashioned story telling at it’s best. A 16 year old boy, Tiuri, is on a quest to deliver a letter, avoiding those who want to kill him and find out the secret of the letter he has in his possession. It's hard for him to know who means him harm and who wants to help!
Outdoor Wonderland: the Kid’s Guide to Being Outside by Josie Jeffery, illustrated by Alice Lickens. (For all the family)
This is a great activity book for the whole family with lots of great fun ideas to explore our outdoor world. It has nine categories including In the Street, Sunny Days and Rainy Days packed with activities, tips and a- discover-more page.
An Officer & A Spy by Robert Harris
This very well reviewed novel has just come into paperback making it a perfect pick-up for holidays. Robert Harris is a master at taking a fact, in this case the Dreyfus Affair, and weaving it into thrilling and gripping story. This is a novel that demands you turn off your mobile and read.
And Then Came Paulette by Barbara Constantine, translated from French by Justin Phipps.
