Another murder in Colchester.

Hello all,

Following on from the horrific murder of James Attfield in March and the murder of Nahid Almanea this week, Essex police have suggested people in Colchester do not go out alone.

I grew up in Colchester and lived there for twenty years (only just down the road now). I know the two areas well and they are in quite close proximity.

What are your thoughts? What is the general feeling where you live?

I will be attempting to get some advice on ways to keep yourself safe but obviously a lot is common sense.

This reminds me a little of the atmosphere in Suffolk when those awful murders in Ipswich happened- the slow dawning of the feeling that this was going to get out of control and worsen.

Sadly seeing as both sexes have been victims, at least we cannot say that once again women are left feeling less safe and in a smaller space than men.

Interestingly, both victims come from groups that suffer prejudice- gay people and Muslims. I wonder if they are hate crimes although how many murder comes from anything other than a place of hate I do not know.

Being really visible- walking in a brightly lit place, making noise, not walking too close to hedges, wallls, alleyways and walking strongly and powerfully, not scurrying along looking scared- those are my tips.

I am so sad for the families. May they see the murderer caught and soon.

I have spoken to the very helpful Sgt. Lou Middleton of Colchester Police.

He has recommended the following sites
www.essex.police.uk/be_safe/personal_safety1.aspx
&
www.suzylamplugh.org/personal-safety-tips/

Please have a read and take on board the tips to keep yourself safe. Unfortunatly there was an attempted attack on a jogger in New Town last night. May or may not be connected but do keep safe.
