Abbey Meadows Primary School

Hi,
We're moving to Cambridge this summer and our son has been allocated a place in reception at Abbey Meadows. It seems to be one of the only under-subscribed schools and its last Ofsted wasn't good but I wanted to hear if anyone out there has any personal experience of the school. I appreciate that Ofsted reports don't always give a full picture!
Thanks Martina

I don't know the school in that my children go to a different one.
However, it does seem to have some passionately committed parents who rate it highly.
I would see that as a good thing.
If I were you, I would phone for a chat with the Head and try and arrange a visit.
Good luck.

My two children go to Abbey Meadows -- they've both been there since reception and are now in Yr 5 and Yr 3.

I'm very happy with the school, and my children have done extremely well there. They're both performing well above national expectations academically, and they are happy socially too. My elder child has asperger syndrome and the support he has had from the school has been absolutely fantastic -- they have really gone the extra mile for him.

The last Ofsted was a huge shock, and the school has worked incredibly hard to address the issues they highlighted -- I think they have turned the place around. And the reception staff are wonderful! The school has got a lovely atmosphere, though it's large it feels like a small school, if you see what I mean. It's a very diverse school, and everyone is valued.

But don't take my word for it -- go and have a look for yourself. I think there are new parents meetings coming up soon (I've seen posters around the school for them) but I think they always try to make time to see prospective parents.

Thanks so much for those responses - really really helpful. I went to visit the school last Friday and was really impressed. They have so much space - inside and out - and it is a lovely busy but calm environment. It felt like a really friendly school with great learning opportunities. I would have no hesitation about sending my son there. The only thing that I'm not sure about now is the distance from our new house! Thanks again

I know someone who seems happy with the school, however there is a quite a lot of turnover in schools so it might be worth going on waiting lists of nearer schools as well

Just to update the thread.

Abbey Meadows had an Ofsted inspection a couple of weeks ago.

It is now rated as Good, Outstanding for behaviour and leadership. The report will be on the Ofsted web site next week.
