Hello, I know there's quite a few threads on here about Hitchin, but reading them has made me more confused as views are v mixed! We currently live near Brixton, London, can't buy here as it's too expensive, and my dd is going to school next year so the pressure is on to move now. We've been looking in Hitchin a bit as it's still just affordable (although gone up a lot from last year as far as I can see), found a little house and had an offer accepted (near samuel lucas school), and now we're panicking about whether we actually want to live there! I just want to figure out what kind of place it is - there seems to be loads going on for kids, fine, but what about adults? What do you do at the weekend (stupid question maybe but there's so much on your doorstep in London)?? What are the restaurants/pubs like? And what's the commute like from where I'll be (Bedford St) - dh & I will be commuting in 4 days a week. Right now it feels like a huge leap as Brixton/London is so culturally diverse, full of energy with loads of restaurants that aren't just part of a chain - we just don't know what Hitchin 'is' if you see what I mean! Also, does anyone know about admissions for samuel lucas - would my dd get in for sure living where we would potentially live as the other schools nearby get a bad ofsted rating. It's so hard moving when you're happy where you are! Thanks so much x ps. What's the nearest hospital like for giving birth in?? Is it in Stevenage? Do they have a birth centre? Are homebirths the done thing Hitchin? Sorry, too many questions!!

Hello! I can't answer all your questions but I can give some insight. We live in letchworth but lived in hitchin for many years. So my opinion is based on what I know from friends who live there and knowledge from visits and my past experience. I think you should be fine from Bedford street for Samuel Lucas as they now have a 60 child intake. Take a look at herts county council website under school admissions and it will show you the furthest distance the last child was admitted to the school. Hitchin schools can be oversubscribed and a lot depends on siblings which are higher up the priority list. I agree if you don't get Samuel Lucas the other schools would not be my 1st choice but this is only through ofsted.. Visiting the schools will give you a better insight. It's good to tt other mums too who's children go to these schools. ( I found that far more helpful than ofsted )!

Hitchin IMO is a lovely town. Lots of lovely shops and independent restaurants. I prefer visiting hitchin and living in letchworth which is closeby, but this is just personal opinion. I find letchworth a bit more laid back but I love hitchin town.
