Advice on living in Newmarket please

Hello,
Due to work we are looking to move to Newmarket. We do not know the area at all. We have been there only once to look for houses but it is not easy to have a feel as we live quite far. We have done a little bit of research and it seems that the South is more popular than the North of the town.
From what we have seem, the town looks lovely and it seems there are things to do with the children but I have heard quite a lot of negative comments, which made me wonder if that was the best place for us.

I was wondering if there were any mums or dads who could give me their honest opinion on the town and what it is like to live there.
We are possibly considering to live in the area near the Houldsworth Valley school. Any opinion on this area would be great as well.
Thanks

Newmarket really is a bit of a dump. Do you really have to live there?
Where will you be working? There are some very nice villages around Newmarket which are much more appealing than the town itself. Only good thing about the town is that property tends to be quite cheap there compared to the surrounding area.

Gosh. I don't know Newmarket at all but surely can't be written off as a dump?
What about horse racing history? Must be historic interesting parts to town, surely?

I'm not a parent but a nanny who lives in Newmarket and I do not think it is a dump at all. Yes like most places, it has areas which arnt as nice as others but I have lived both near the station & in Bury Road and they are both nice areas. I don't know about schools but I personally don't like the studlands area.

I don't know it at all but a friend of mine used to live there and did call it a dump - but I think that is realative to say Cambridge and the little viallages around -depends where you are from -and what you are used to - btw its is just into Suffolk so you might want to post on Mumsnet Suffolk as well
