Moving to Oxford without a car, advice needed

Dh got a job at Oxford university and we're looking at moving there by the new academic year. We'd like to buy a house but anything affordable seems to be quite a trek from uni, our budget is at most £300k for a 2 bed. We have 1 DC under two and no car, so need to be located within walking distance/ short bus ride to nurseries, etc.

Any advice from Oxford locals on which areas to focus on appreciated.

Also, is childcare in Oxford truly the nightmare that everyone says it is?! Should we be applying for nursery place now?!

Hey - Oxford questions may get more answers on Mumsnet Oxford however most of Oxford is pretty well served by buses and is fairly bicycle-friendly. When you say 'Oxford University' where exactly will he be working? In a college? You may need to be more specific.
If you want to get more for your money then you could look at one of the smaller towns or villages just outside Oxford, all of which have excellent bus links into the city and, if you're to be a SAHM, are nice and easy to live in without a car because everything is walking distance. Examples would be Abingdon, maybe Wallingford, Kidlington?

Hope this helps. I'm afraid Local Talk can sometimes be a little slow to respond, but usually throws up useful answers when it does.

Have you considered Abingdon? It has very good regular bus service to Oxford - the X3 every 10 minutes. Abingdon is great for small children as there are lots of groups for them and great parks and sports facilities including a lovely swimming pool at the White Horse Leisure Centre

Your budget for buying will easily get you a good sized 2 bed there and change for an awful lot of bus fares.
