Hello. We're looking to relocate from Herts and I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on Evercreech. I've not lived in a village before - or Somerset for that matter! - so any tips/insider information on areas would be hu
gely appreciated! Thanks very much!

Hi

I don't know Evercreech but location wise it is close to Wells, Shepton, Street, etc so good for shopping, socialising and work. Living in the country does involve a lot of driving to get anywhere as public transport is patchy so being closer to larger towns is probably a good idea if you are new to the area otherwise you may feel isolated.

I grew up in Evercreech and have very fond memories of it - however, my husband has a very differing, less rose-tinted opinion!

Property is very expensive in the village, there is little public transport, a lot of the pubs have closed down (this is important to him) and it does have an air of gloom. Sorry, Evercreech.

The good news is - the school is well thought of, although I don't know its' Ofsted rating. And a recording of the Evercreech church bells were used on the national radio each Sunday morning, back in the day! Oh, and the first Glastonbury festival was held very nearby (I can remember not being able to get home because of the queues).

Not much help, I'm afraid. To be honest, I would go back but I think there are much prettier and better served villages in the area.

Well, those are some really useful tips. Thanks very much AbigailsRevenge and LambethWalk. I think, perhaps, I might be more cut out for town life, though the village idea does seem, on the surface anyway, quite idyllic. Thanks again ladies!
