I've just had an e-mail from Under the Greenwood Tree saying they are closing at the end of April. Apparently because the rent was 'shooting up'.
So many bookshops have closed around here recently - The Golden Treasury, Bolingbroke bookshop, Village Books...
I used to love UGT and the Golden Treasury and they always seemed pretty busy to me but I wonder whether independent bookshops are a thing of the past with Amazon and e-books. I really hope not but it's looking that way.
Also occurs to me that with the levels rents have reached around here, the range of businesses we are going to get must narrow as only the most successful will be able to afford it.
Not sure what the answer is but it makes me sad.
