Calling all parents/carers of children and young adults with SLCN:

Have you heard about Afasic?

We’re a small, parent-led charity that represents children and young adults with speech, language and communication impairments. For over 45 years, Afasic has been reaching out to families across the UK, providing information, support and expert advice. We pride ourselves on the high-quality services we offer, from training courses for parents and professionals to our Helpline, open four days a week (call 08453 55 55 77).

Help us to support you

Our parents and carers are an integral part of who we are and what we do. We also know how precious your time is and we value every moment of it.

Volunteering for Afasic can be anything you want it to be - an opportunity to meet other parents, develop your professional skills, or just to have fun with family and friends. With flexible activities tailored to your needs, you can make a difference in whatever way suits you best. If a minute or two is all you’ve got to spare, you can even show your support by registering online (email me to find out how).

What else can I do?

  • Follow us on Twitter or join the Afasic Facebook group to share hints and tips with other parents.

  • Help to set up a local support group for parents and carers in your area.

  • Be part of our parent/carer consultative panel and give us your views on the issues that affect your child.

  • Review SLCN resources for our quarterly newsletter, Afasic News.

  • Support the Afasic ‘Every Voice Counts’ appeal by organising a fundraising event with a talking theme (think Talkathons and Tongue Twister competitions!)

If you’d like to find out about volunteering opportunities in Nottinghamshire, or feel you could benefit from more local support, please contact Saoradh Favier on 07908030106 or email [email protected].

Together, we can raise the profile of this little understood and often ‘invisible’ disability, promoting acceptance and improving the quality of services for children and young adults with speech, language and communication needs.
