What is Sidcup really like?

Hi All,

We are considering moving to Sidcup. We actually looked (and are still looking) in Chislehurst but after visiting various schools in the local area for DDs aged 2 & 4, the 2 schools we like (Merton Court/Benedicte House) are in Sidcup. We know Chislehurst is more upmarket, has a nice village feel and the high street in Sidcup is not that nice looking, but the difference is also reflected in house prices. Also think DDs will have a better chance of getting into one of the Bexley grammar schools as would be closer (for Chislehurst probably limited to Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar and we actually prefer a girls secondary school like Townley) and walk to their prep school in the meantime. Trains are slightly more frequent as well.

Whilst reviews of Chislehurst are almost all positive, Sidcup seems to be a bit more mixed. Some say very nice; some say people are a bit racist (we are Chinese so this matters), troubles near the station/Metro Bar, some shooting/murder incidents in the past, people being called names on the high street, etc. But some of these comments are quite old. So would really appreciate some local insider info to help us decide.

Is it safe in general? Which parts or streets are nicer/to avoid?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi Marigio,

Sidcup has good and bad areas as any other town. I would say that if you focus your search around the bexley side of sidcup and around blackfen you should be fine.

Oh! Estate agent said more desirable areas are south of Sidcup station on either side of Station Road before High Street, and avoid towards Albany Park as there are more council estates?! But that's on Bexley side right??! Blackfen would be north side of Sidcup station? I wonder if they are saying that as they want to show/sell me one in that south area... although it does look quite nice and close to schools we like.

south of sidcup is nice too but not close to the high street though.
The best things is for you to drive around so you will have a feel of the area.
Where do you live at the moment?
Have you decided between merton court and benedicte house?

We live in East London at the moment. Not decided between the two yet, seems to have their own good points although very different, we like both! Any advice?
