Rickmansworth

My fiancé and I are looking to buy our first home, which is super exciting but getting a little frustrating! We had planned to live in west/south west London or Surrey but he got a new job based in Welwyn Garden City. So we went back to the drawing board (and a small bit of living vaguely close by from me)and came up with Rickmansworth as well as Northwood. Rickmansworth is better in terms of value and housing stock. We went to see a house yesterday and loved it. Town centre location and very pretty. A lovely first home. A walk around the town centre felt so far from London for me and a little dull and suburban. My fiance, being from a similar area in Surrey, loved it. It is the best place technically (houses, value, future family life) but I still need convincing!! Please can you tell me some of the lovely things about living in Rickmansworth! Or even suggest somewhere else I should look! Thanks!

Good things about Rickmansworth
It's on the tube
You can learn to sail
It has excellent state schools
Excellent road links (M25 M40 M1 etc)
Excellent air transport links (Heathrow v easy drive)
Good housing stock
It's pretty
It's a safe place to raise a young family with lots of outdoor space
V close to shopping in Watford

Bad things
It's a safe place to raise a young family Grin
Shops are rubbish
restaurants are rubbish

Have you looked at St Albans, it has much more of a city vibe and there's much more going on. Plus it's much closer to WGC for commuting.

watching closely as we are thinking about moving there too. It is a pretty area and the schools are great. Transport links good and you would get more 'bang for your buck' as Alsopp says..
do you know what the good areas are? I have heard only of Mill End though.
