Mostly I'm looking for somewhere my 15 mo DS can play, especially with other kids as he's a lone child and we have no local friends with kids. Money is tight so we can't really afford to pay to go to groups.

Places near Hemel would be best for us, but willing to travel.

Anyone able to recommend anywhere?

Try the children centres they usually have really cheap sessions or a playgroup run in a local church is often less than £1.

The mums and tots at the grovehill community centre is only £1 and its nice there.

Stockwood Park in Luton is amazing and free.

It might be a bit far for you but Digswell garden centre has a nice outdoor play area for free. The Galleria soft play is good for little ones and free for under 1's I think. As someone else suggested try the local children's centre as they offer cheaper options.
