Walthamstow village artisan coffee shop

Hi Walthamstow mums. We wanted to ask all of you your opinion. We are especially interested to hear from people that have migrated from Stokey to walthamstow and the village. We are looking to open a really lovely artisan coffee shop within the village, we wanted to know if this would be something you would welcome? For those of you that know Stokey we are aiming for something a lot like Fred & Frans. We will do Barista prepared coffees, along with a wide selection of baked goods and pasties from E5 Bakery in Hackney. We want the place to be a welcome addition to the village and a hub for people to meet up and relax. All opinions welcome... Thanks!

I doubt if anyone would object to good coffee and pastries! I am one of those ex-Stokey people and do miss the choice and quality of cafes in N16.

Speaking as an ex-hackney-ite (not sure ex-stokey people's opinions matter so much? Are they considered only people in e17 capable of good taste or likely to have ever visited an artisan coffee shop?!) would LOVE a great coffee shop like you describe. However, my only question would be why does it have to be in the village? There are other areas of walthamstow that desperately need attention and investment from the community and I could guarantee custom. I meet with other mums regularly (none of whom live in the village) and we lament the lack of a good coffee place and the fact that all new investment seems to be obsessed with that area. Do please do it but remember awesomestow is more than just one street. Good luck.

Agree with lilhic. Would really welcome coffee shop with good quality coffee - it's much needed - but agree doesn't have to be in the village. Definitely worth considering other parts of Walthamstow because am convinced there are plenty of people in the borough, not just in the village who are seeking out good coffee!
Other thing to consider is that a couple of cafes in the village that serve coffee don't have toilets or baby change, which is really off-putting. This would be a must if you want to attract mums and babies wanting to be able to enjoy a leisurely coffee and cake. Other areas of W'stow might afford you more space and facilities on that front.

Does Walthamstow really need more cool cafes? Daisys, LHirondelle, Le Delice, Arts & Crusts, La Bonita, Le Cafeteria, Lot 107... All flipping brilliant, all kid friendly to different degrees, all outside the village area. And hey, why not lo e Walthamstow for what it has, not what Stokey has?

Thank you very much for your considered feedback, made very good food for thought (or coffee!) interestingly myself and partner had reached same conclusion that we wish to embrace a different area of Walthamstow. Currently we are looking at properties close to Lloyd park, near to the museum, and hoe st, near to Bell junction... But any other areas you think it's worth us looking at recommendations welcome.

As for the toilets, we have it high on our priority list to offer good baby facilities, we are also now looking to have an interior store on the same premise. Hopefully in time we will offer craft and interior design workshop classes.

Be lovely to have your thoughts, we are very keen to offer something that the community can really embrace.

There is more to Waltham Forest than Walthamstow especially the Village and Lloyd Park, How about Leyton, Lea Bridge, Markhouse Road, Leytonstone hell anywhere south of Orford Road! These places do exist! Try expanding your horisons. Do those residents not drink coffee or perhaps they even can't spell Artisan let alone know what Artisan coffee is. All this influx from Stokey, Hackney trying to convert Walthamstow to little E16 is beyond irritating and ridiculous.

Actually Leyton is closer to Hackney than Walthamstow so maybe I'll just continue to spend my money in Chatsworth Road

I love the sound of your proposed coffee shop. I live in the village bit and I would say there is a need round here. I work from home and have a baby so fit into both the mum and the freelancer camps. The deli is always rammed and doesn't have a loo or baby changing. Eat17 is lovely but more of a restaurant so not so good for coffees and everyday lunches and there's nowhere else I would go in the day in the village. I love Lot107 on wood st but they don't have wifi as they don't want the freelancer crew in there and they are also always rammed. Cafe Bonito is nice, but no highchairs and I am not sure he is that keen on kids. Then Daisy's is always full of big groups of men in the kids area - I think it must have changed hands - and le delice is quite a long walk away, as are the WM tearooms.
There are lots of options here sure, but the ones that are handy to me are always packed and I would definitely frequent your cafe as you have described it and so would my friends, those with and without babies.

Yes PLEASE! I know that there are quite a few coffee places already but walthamstow is a big place and has plenty of room for one more, especially one that's a nice, light filled space and does genuinely good coffee and deli goods (there aren't, really, that many of those...) And Beulah Rd would be good, slightly away from Orford Road, slightly further towards me! There are so many mums working from home in the neighbourhood, sure we'd all really appreciate somewhere to get an expresso fix and some wifi.

Would love a new place as get a bit tired of the same old places in the village and Eat 17 is great but so packed. Also it closes between lunch and dinner - just when I / mums and babies (I am a mum but also work sometimes in town and sometimes from home) need an afternoon outing! I have also noticed as on my way to work that no where on Orford road opens that early for coffee on the way to work. The Village Bakery opens, but not early enough to catch the on their way to work in town crew and they often only have one member of staff there at that time so the queue means you can't grab and go. Just thinking there is a gap there for early morning and afternoon, and agree on loos and baby changing. I also think a cafe with books for sale, particularly children's book and some kids books to look at whilst grown ups have coffee would get my vote. GOod luck with your venture !

All going to plan we are looking to open in 2 months time, sorry it can't be sooner there is just so much to organise. But I promise it will be worth the wait. Please can someone open something like this at the Coppermill Lane end of Walthamstow? The place is crying out for it!

So glad to hear of more good quality coffee options in E17 - everywhere is popular these days. I would really appreciate a High Street location for artisan coffee, to have somewhere to stop whilst shopping. The Village is nice, but I have to make an effort to specifically go there, rather than having good coffee in the places I normally go.

I'm a bit late on this one but I have joined mumsnet because of this post too! I agree with PollyIndia and Marchmellow, the village needs a decent coffee shop. Eat 17 does the only decent coffee but they aren't really that keen on coffee drinkers and prefer diners. The village really needs a good barister style coffee joint. I've grown up in the Stow and spent a decade living in Hackney now I'm back and my heart still belongs here. I love the potential E17 has always had it just takes someone brave like you Nomad2408 to bring some fabulous coffee to us! There is still plenty of room for improvement and huge demand for this in the Village.

I think it is good to diversify but interior design would not be my first choice. I would much rather see a cafe with a nice space at the back for pilates and similar run DURING SCHOOL HOURS and at more reasonable prices than the two current choices along Hoe Street. I would love it if you could do something similar to another place in Dalston where you get yoga followed by a bagel and drink within the same fee

When you are up and running in Walthamstow, focus your next project on Leytonstsone - lots of latent demand. Best of luck with your new venture.

Has anyone tried the new Spanish cafe or organic cafe on Wood Street? i heard Spanish cafe is particularly popular as sells real hot chocolate & fresh churros!

Hi Walthamstow Mums,

It sounds like there's lots of need for good coffee in the area which is exactly what I thought when I moved here two months a go. Not one to hang around, my partner and I have set up Wood Street Coffee as a pop at Wood Street Indoor Market. We're there on Sundays 11-4 serving Climpson's & Sons coffee (who do a great decaf by the way), with organic milk or Soy if you prefer. There's a mix of Lucy Scott Traybakes brownies/blondes and some vegan treats from Norman Loves (both local businesses). We're at the Marlowe Road entrance, so right opposite the park and there's seating outside (in the shade!).

We'd love to see you on Sunday or when you can make it over - being new to the area we're finding it a great way to meet new people.

Apologies OP as you probably didn't know a great deal about The Village's reputation when you posted originally, but I really thought that this was going to be a piss-take thread when I saw the header. The only things that could possibly improve it being the addition of the words "organic", "vintage" and/or "cupcake". ;-) so glad that you decide to go elsewhere in the end.

Erm, Mikocat, what exactly do you mean about the village's reputation??? I moved to 'The Village' 13 years ago when I used to count the burnt out cars on my way home from work. Anyone who criticises the 'Village' now wasn't exactly queueing up to live here back then. You will find a lot of VERY normal people live here, mainly because they couldn't bloody afford to live anywhere else 10 years ago. If you think a load of new media types only inhabit the Village, try telling that to the retirees, impoverished artists and original Walthamstowites that live on my street.
I think anyone who talks about the village's REPUTATION would love to live here but can't afford it and didn't have the kahunas big enough to buy here while it was still rough and unaffordable.
