Just been duped this morning and wanted to warn others.
A lady in her 60s who spoke poor English seemed to find a wedding ring on the pavement in front of me. She showed it to me and I said she should take it to a police station. She then started saying that she didn't have any food so I thought I should give her some money and take it to the police myself, which I duly did. Then as I looked at it closer the hallmark was unconvincing and it didn't weigh enough to be solid metal. When I got to the police station sure enough they confirmed that this was a not uncommon scam.
Apparently the perpetrators generally target mums with young children as they tend to be in a hurry.
