Recent experiences of maternity units in SW1

Hi, I'm 12 weeks pregnant and due in June 2013. It will be my first birth. It took us a while to get here and I'm late 30s - not sure this makes a difference! Anyway, I'm automatically referred to C&W maternity but I'm feeling a bit concerned having seen all the damning reviews. My midwife also told me i would labour in a ward which makes me uncomfortable. I'm now thinking I should look at other hospitals or private birth, but private midwife led packages looks very expensive. I've heard I'm probably too late for consultant led now as they book up. Any recent and honest advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Have you thought about a midwife-led birth centre? I'm in SW1, my GP wanted to refer me to C&W but we're in the catchment area for St Mary's so I asked to go there - their birth centre is AMAZING - I cannot recommend it enough!
