Anyone have an opinion on these primary schools??

Hello there,

We will be moving to Edinburgh next year and are thinking about areas to live in. We are restricted by finances and the kind of areas we could likely afford fall into the catchment areas for Granton Primary & Ferryhill Primary. I was wondering if anyone had kids at these schools and could recommend them or otherwise?

Or are there any not too expensive ha ha it's Edinburgh! areas that we should consider because they have a particularly good primary school?

We're not too worried about secondary schools just yet as we might not still be living in Edinburgh when that time comes, and we are open to living in any area of the city.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

These are not personal opinions these are from the copy if the Edinburgh school guide magazine.
The recent issue.

Granton primary is ranked 61/87 in Edinburgh and ferry hill is ranked 72/87. Not the best but I wouldn't know. Portobello\ duddingston is quite a good area

Thanks Mani. I hadn't heard of that magazine but will maybe try and get hold of a copy. Cheers!

Ferry hill seems to be the school that everyone wants round there. They currently have a new head and the parents were excited. I found the staff to be lovely and welcoming.

My friends children are at Granton and are thriving and achieving well. She seems to be happy.

We're in West Edinburgh towards the airport and there can be affordable houses round here which are lovely.

Thanks everyone. It's very reassuring to hear personal opinions. It seems such a major decision (this is pfb starting school in P1!).

Are there any schools that you really don't recommend?

I've not had much personal experience with any other schools

www.edinburgh.gov.uk/directory/13/primary_schools might help you with catchment area's though :-)

I would reccommend making appointments with any that you are considering and look at the schools websites for an insight to help you judge

I think at the end of September, government run schools will be having an open day at some point so you can actually see the school.

Smurfy1 · 27/08/2012 07:36

Not in Scotland, schools have already gone back

BebeBelge · 27/08/2012 07:45

We're overseas at the moment and won't actually be back in Scotland until probably next Sept, which complicates things even more I know. So we'll have to start the school year late and can't apply until we know where we will be living Confused. Thanks again everyone!

There is an open day on the 27th of Sept when you can visit your catchment school 10-3pm to see how the school is in working hours.

Hermitage Park is a good school, and it is in Leith, with a wide range of property prices around it.

froggydoo · 27/08/2012 17:22

I have a couple of friends with kids at hermitage park and they say very good things about it. It has excellent results. Nice area around it also with some bits much more affordable than other bits of Edinburgh!

BebeBelge · 28/08/2012 03:43

Oooh, I really like Leith! Will def check out Hermitage Park's catchment area!
