Moving house between children - affect on primary place applications?

Hi

Does anyone know what would happen if we were to move house after DS is placed in primary school so that we were out of catchment by the time we apply for DD?

I am not keen on the idea of moving him once he has started if we are not too far away, but if we don't move him what are the chances of DD getting an out of catchment placement?

Thanks!

Depends on the school. Our catchment school has allowed everyone in this year, yet last year not one got a place. It does tend to be the luck of the draw. I know one family where big brother and twin one went to one school and twin 2 went to another school for a year until a place became available.

The problem always seems to be the Primary1 class size restrictions. In our school nobody gets in out of catchment at all for P1 and usually P2 but then there are a few places each year as people move in and out. Siblings get no priority if you are out of catchment.

I think having a brother/sister at the school makes you next in line after being in catchment, ie above a child with no siblings at the school. Ds is about to start p1 and I've wondered the same thing. If it's a popular/over subscribed school I think it's not very likely, for p.1.
But then, some kids who are registered for p.1 will in fact end up going to private schools instead.. You might be lucky, but it's a risk.

Hmm digging around on the council website it seems they expect problems accommodating catchment kids while intake rises to 2016! looks like we have a problem....

we are moving to Edinburgh . would it be easier to wait until both kids are in school before we come? it sounds like placing might be easier after p2? or is it an equally stressful route?

Is there a reason that you'd have to move house before both kids were at school? If you're not here already, why not choose an area you could just stay in.

If we can do that we will but there are not many houses that would suit us coming on the market so i can't see it being the most likely scenario that we could stay in 1catchment even though we would like to. i am just trying to think through the different options. our original plan had been to sell our current house then rent to be chain free - but its not working out to be completely hassle free!
