Trafford primary school admission - deadline question

Hi. I applied late for my son to go to our local primary school as I did not realise the applications had opened. He didn't get a place which is a nightmare as his older brother is there and we live less than a 5 minute walk from the school so if we had applied on time I am sure he would have gotten in. My husband and I both work and there is no way we can get the kids to different schools in the morning. Does anybody know if the local authority has a duty to inform you of the admission deadline? I want to appeal against the decision so any ammunition would be welcome! Also, if anyone else has appealed, any advice would be great. Thanks all.

Didn't they have any posters up in school or anything? What a nightmare! You can appeal of course...but I don't think the school has a duty to inform....we had emails and also notes on the school website. Didn't you hear any of the other parents discussin it? Feel for you a lot.

We are in Trafford too - sorry to hear you missed the deadline. Was the admissions window not the same when you applied with your older child? I don't think the onus is really on the LEA to remind people when to apply so I doubt you could use that argument in an appeal. We went through the process for the first time this year and knew to do it simply through talking to friends and also looking at Trafford gov website (which stated all the deadlines quite clearly). I think you only stand a chance of winning an appeal if you can prove you have been treated unfairly. Have you put your child's name on the waiting lists at your preferred school? HOpe you get something sorted - I have a few other friends in Trafford who haven't got the schools they wanted due to them being very oversubscribed. Good luck!
