Thinking we may use the ScotRail ticket offer during the Feb half term. We are new to Edinburgh and it would be nice to see a bit more of Scotland - any suggestions of nice places to go to by rail for a few days?

How about Pitlochry. Don't use the train a lot but did go there once by train. But was pre children so not sure if there's lots for them, but nice walks/pubs.

Also, you should spend some time in Glasgow. If your kids are over 4 the science centre is good.

Closer to home you could spend a half day in Linlithgow (on the line to Glasgow) if the weathers nice. It's my hometown. There's the palace, peel and loch, which can be walked round (with buggy if neccessary), the canal centre and plenty of nice wee cafes and shops.

My kids would enjoy a trip to Burntisland at any time of year, in winter they'd just be wrapped up well and still mess around on the beach for ages. Also, this trip involves going across the Forth Road Bridge, which is great, and isn't too long, so a nice day trip.
