Edinburgh Restaurants

Hi, I'll be visiting Edinburgh for the festival next month and wondered if anyone could recommend places to eat for both breakfast/brunch and evening meal. I've had a look on trip advisor but there are so many to trawl through, so thought I'd give mnet a try.

all depends on buget
but point hotel is nice - good breakfast, lunch
hendersons yum
and nice pub lunches in new town eg wally dug great wee find

and good chippies etc, try royal mile
royal mile has nice pubs

if want posh with atmosphere try witchery

do avoid rose steet, nasty pubs and bit tacky

We'll be stopping just off Canongate. But will be in central areas most days/evenings.

We've been to the New Town version of La Garrigue and it is lovely, so I'm sure the Old Town version would be too. Not cheap though

Also Chez Jules on Cockburn Street, more affordable French, but I can't find their website so not sure if they are still there.

I wouldn't avoid Rose St at all, there is a great mexican and some lovely pubs, Kenilworth and Abbotsford spring to mind the Abbotsford has a good restaurant upstairs. Both of these are in the Good Beer guide and are lovely original interiors.

Do you have young kids? It makes a difference to the appropriateness of recommendations.

What budget brackets?

For a fancy, top end, good value you would be hard pushed to beat Wedgewood on teh Royal Mile. Fantastic food, good portions and an excellent price for the quality. Though advance booking would be a must.

Middle of the road prices but high quality - I'd head down to Thistle Street and look at TexMex2 good food really good quality, or the Valvona Crolla stable of restaurants - Centrotre (Queen St), Vin Caffe (off St Andrew's Sq).

Always Sunday on the Royal Mile does gorgeous cooked breakfasts.

My 2 love the filling station up the high street or there's one on Rose Street, Jimmy Cheungs Buffet restaurant, Lloyds bar is child friendly too. My son loves going there on match days for spag bol with dad's and the lads.

pancho villa is fab and cafe royal has amazing interior
abbotsford is outstanding i agree but rose street is dire and bit scabbie,a bit like a bin lane with all the shop back doors.overall i dont rate rose street

Loads of fab places to eat!

Miros Cantina on Rose Street (East End) is a great Mexican, Pancho Villas also v good.

I second the recommendation for Hendersons, fantastic veggie food but does get v busy at lunchtimes.

Howies also excellent IMO, they have four restaurants in Edin and do a great value set lunch (£8.95)and dinner (£13.95 - plus child friendly)

If you don't mind venturing out the city centre, Cafe Grande on Bruntsfield Place does a great cooked breakfast, veggie and 'normal'.

If you're in Leith and fancy a cheap tasty lunch/brunch try The Water of Leith cafe - it's fab.It's kid friendly if you've got kids.

thing about e'burgh is it is all walkable.good choices

I forgot to say if you want a booking at a decent restaurant during the festival you will need to book in advance especially in the evening.

Thankyou again for recommendations. The Abbotsford and Cafe Royal look amazing inside. I willl look up the others and go armed with maps so I can't miss them, can't wait.

If you like fish then try The Mussel Inn on Rose Street, the food is fantastic.

Bells Diner in St Stephens Street in Stockbridge - the best burgers with fab toppings and a huge tray of relishes plus amazing ice cream and pancake puds. It is definitely worth missing lunch to enjoy a reasonably guilt-free hot fudge sunday pancake! It is small though so book, but not expensive and huge portions.

Dusit in Thistle Street is a fab Thai restaurant, and Fishers in the City in the same street is great for seafood.

If you want fish and chips L'Alba D'Oro on Henderson row is fantastic, they have seats round about the window where you can eat them, very casual. Next door there is anima which they own and do pizza, pasta and pizza, they are great, with a visit if you want somewhere quick. L'Alba D'Oro is known for being a chippy to Alot of celebrities and they don't charge an arm and a leg like some places throughout the festival, their prices stay the same.

mani83 they also do a special fish to die for. They put dry sage and onion stuffing in the breadcrumbs yum yum yum

I love that one! It's amazing, staff are super friendly as well, it's my local! Lol

And they do battered cauliflower - sounds strange, tastes great!

The Spice Pavilion on Dundas Street is fantastic.
