Hello, following on from the children's pub thread (you know what i mean) please may I have your recommendations for good pubs for special meals. I need to book somewhere for DH's birthday. Probably within about a 20 minute drive radius of Cambridge (otherwise the baby sitting will cost more).

I know there are supposed to be some really nice places in the surrounding villages, I just don't know which ones. :)

Think a bit posher than the Golden Hind but not as much as Midsummer house. and one I can book with a week's notice.

Thankuiu

I will ask around - my mum goes to loads of pubs in the villages... she is part of a walking group as opposed to a heavy drinker BTW!!

Another vote for Little Wilbraham, The Hole in the Wall, more of a gastropub she said

Also slightly less grand but all pleasant, The Eight Bells at Waresley, The Dyke?s End at Reach, The Plough at Fen Ditton or The Three Tuns at Fen Drayton.

The Blue Lion at Hardwick is lovely, DH and I went there for our anniversary and i went with my mother for lunch There is a lovely conservatory at the back and a garden which backs onto fields with sheep in! Great for families or couples (I sound like an advert!)

Ooh thanks, the Plough is the only one of those we've tried before. I will see if the Hole in the wall has a table.

I'll second 'The Blue Lion' at Hardwick. It is probably just at the edge of 20 mins but 'The Brampton Mill' in Huntingdon is well worth it.

If the Hole in the Wall has not got a table check out the Tickell Arms in Whittlesford! Dh and I went there to celebrate our anniversary a few years back and have been back many times. The food is excellent.

The Punter does nice food but might be too Central for you although there is lots of free parking nearby. Otherwise the King William at Heydon used to be very good but I haven't been there for a long while.

Three Horseshoes - Madingley is still very good. Restaurant 22 on Chesterton Road. The Cock - Hemingford Grey.

Another vote for the Cock at Hemingford Grey, also Red Lion at Hinxton and Green Man at Granchester are good.
