Pubs with Outdoor Children's Play Area

BettyBleu · 04/06/2011 20:08

Inspired by the warmer weather. Does anyone know which pubs/restaurants in and around Cambridge have outdoor play areas for children.

We've been to the Red Lion in Granchester which is nice and has a climbing frame and slide but would like some alternatives.

If the food is good too that would be great!

My daughter is the assistant manager at the Red Lion [proud]. No help though sorry Blush

As far as I know, there are very few.

There is The Ranch on Histon Road which was touting itself as family friendly with a big garden. Not sure what they have in it though and, when we went, the food was (of course) lousy.

The Missing Sock out near Bottisham would appear to have some kids stuff in its garden but I have no idea what the place or food is like.

We were up in North Norfolk at the weekend and went to the Jolly Sailors in Brancaster - a pub that has a large climbing frame, a big garden, a good kids' menu and good beer. And it welcomes kids.

How difficult is it to do this in or around Cambridge I wonder?

lovecorrie · 06/06/2011 11:13

This is what Cambridge needs - a really good family friendly pub with an indoor play area, staff to help out etc. We would be happy to pay say £2 a child for them to be engaged for a while. It would also need decent food though - no plastic fish fingers type food! The gym we go to has all that, but obviously isn't a pub Grin prsnbx, are you who i think you are Wink

prsnbx · 06/06/2011 20:39

lovecorrie, I have no idea who you think I am. But I may well be, yes. I am male and have three kids. does that help?

lovecorrie · 06/06/2011 21:45

ah, no you're not then Grin sorry!

BettyBleu · 06/06/2011 22:27

Thank you.

I was driving down Milton Road and saw that the Hungry Horse/Milton Arms had play equipment in their garden so that's another one.

We went to the Hungry Horse on Sunday, first visit. Food not that great (edible, cheap and good kids meal selection) but our little one (almost 3) loved it. Buzzy, lots of other children and a small play area. Felt relaxed but food not really up to much.

The Plough in Coton. Climbing frame, good tree for climbing and camps, space to race about in field next to garden, food was fine (we only had burgers but they were homemade and not over-cooked), not sure about the beer (didn't try it. better go back!), there is a children's menu but we just got ours a pizza to share. Downside is the garden is cut-through by the car park so have to keep good eye on the little ones, plus not exactly picturesque. [NB: my children are small so not sure whether the climbing frame/slide would cut it for bigger ones]

The Queen's Head in Harston too...used to go there when we visited my nephew, back when he was little enough to want to play instead of sit on his DS!

cbmum · 07/06/2011 23:05

Try the Three Horse Shoes in Comberton. There is a large outside play area and the food is ok too. They have a website so you can look at their menu beforehand.

thegrowlygus · 08/06/2011 17:30

Second vote for the Plough in Coton - good food, climbing frame and grass/bushes great for 6 and 4 year old, and once, when husband and me went there for a rare evening meal, the fire alarm went off most of the evening, so they gave us it all free. Which was great. If noisy.

lovecorrie · 08/06/2011 17:39

The Robin Hood is ok. Recently taken over, and we haven't tried the food there since then, but the outside is decent enough - as long as it's warm!

Parkette · 09/06/2011 19:19

The Green Man pub in Shepreth is great. The garden is huge with a climbing frame, swings and smaller houses and cars for younger kids. There is even a den in the middle of some trees to entertain those with plenty of imagination. We've been there a couple of times with friends and the food has always been excellent with generous portions and good kids food too. It's near the garden centre on the A10 for those planning a visit.

The Lion and Lamb in Milton has a bouncy castle, and a trampoline which DD loves.

The food is ok - not gastro pub but has a reasonable range for adults and for kids.

ChoccyJules · 19/06/2011 16:55

Robin Hood, Cherry Hinton much nicer food since the recent take-over (kids have a mix and match menu so you can pick mash, whichever veg etc to avoid the usual chips with everything...and outdoors a good play area (shame about the £1 toy machines though).

Bumping this thread... any updates on nice places to eat in or around Cambridge with good outdoor play areas? A lot can change in 4 years. :)

northofcambridge · 18/03/2015 11:37

Lion and the Lamb in Milton has had an improvement in their play area so still good

zizzirocket · 18/03/2015 12:30

Thank you northofcambridge. :)

ChestertonCharley · 20/03/2015 13:19

The White Swan at Conington has some outdoor play equipment and good beer, though I haven't eaten there.

The Queen's Head in Newton is next to the recreation ground.

Hardwick Pre-School have operated the children's area with great success (according to our 2) on Saturday at the Beer Festival in May.

SummerLightning · 24/03/2015 16:36

Robin Hood Cherry hinton
Bakers Arms Fulbourn (not great food, but cheap)
La Pergola Harlton (restaurant not pub)

Sadly I think the pub in Comberton has gone down hill since it was mentioned (happy to be corrected though)

Lizardc · 25/03/2015 12:54

We went to the Robin Hood two weeks ago. Lovely garden but the climbing frame is currently out of action for fixing. Hopefully it'll be done soon but not sure....

zizzirocket · 13/04/2015 14:45

Thank you everyone.

cambs3p · 24/04/2015 10:37

Robin Hood playarea is now up and running we went last week.

LabMonkey · 24/04/2015 15:35

Another vote for the Lion and Lamb in Milton, pirate ship play park and nice food - kids menu is good quality.

Pufflesome · 03/05/2015 21:45

The Cambridge Blue on Gwydir Street has a nice garden with a wooden 'den' type area which is good for children to play in. No actual play equipment though.
