Blackhall - tell me about living there

Have started to ramp up search for property to rent before we move up this summer. Have seen something in the Blackhall area (nice house but it looks like it's on a busy road) - what's it like living in this part of Edinburgh?

A variety of house styles there, good for commuting to Fife or reaching the bypass to get to Glasgow etc.
Big shopping park (with a Sainsburys) at Craigleith.
Haven't lived in Blackhall since I was a student, I remember you could just about walk home after a night out if you couldn't find a taxi!

Which road is the house on Maggie?

I really like Blackhall. It is a little way out of the city but as OP states it is close to a small retail park and a brilliant Sainsburys.

There are direct & frequent buses into the city and Stockbridge is probably a 20 minute walk or so depending where you live in Blackhall.

Is it the one on Hillview? quite a few for sale on that stretch too. It is pretty busy, although quite central - very handy for school (obviously!) but not far to Sainsbury's and stockbridge is just beyond.

It is the one on Hillview Owl. Do you live around there? It looks like it would be a 15 min walk to ME (P1-3 site).

I realise that there are a number of house styles in that area. I've seen a lot of bungalow types which I am not used to; not many period properties which I prefer but I think I'll have to actually look at houses in the flesh to really know what suits.

Trouble is that I've not seen many that roughly suit and are available around the time that we want to move ie end July.

Am toying with idea of hopping on plane and scouting around - agents have said that it was a bit early prior to this.

I live just the other side of the hill. West is best- but I'm biased. Being closer to Stockbridge is a big +++

I definitely wasn't used to bungalows but when the attic is converted you don't think it is anything other than a trad house.

It's got a trunk road running through it so well served by frequent buses. One thing to do if you are needing access info with public transport is use lothian buses website map. Some areas of Edinburgh are really badly served others are fine.

Queensferry Road can be VERY busy during peak times as it is a main road into Edinburgh. But in some ways that is a good thing as it is well served for buses into the centre. There are lots of shops etc nearby. As it is catchment for Royal High School - 4th or 5th in League tables for Edinburgh (used to be higher!) it tends to be quite a popular area (+ expensive).

It is mainly families and old people that live in the area. Very handy for getting to town with frequent buses - only 10 mins. Close to ME as you say but also has great state Primary and good high school - hence inflated prices in houses for sale. Craigleith very handy and close by and Stockbridge great. Also walkable to Inverleith Park and Botanics (30 mins).

Road you mention is very busy - I would not want to live on it. Also not on the right side of the road for a sunny garden! What about the one in Gardiner Road? Only a couple of minutes away from the Hillview prop but on a quiet street. Not all bungalows are poky - some have generous ceiling height (ours 3m) and well proportioned rooms. A large proportion of the bungalows have been extended to suit modern family life trends.

You should also look at Ravelston and Murrayfield (the bits between St John's Rd and Ravelston Dykes) which are also close to ME and may suit - larger period properties)

It does look busy Choc - that's the reservation I had about it when I looked on the website. Saw Gardiner road on the same website and it looks ok, will make enquiries.

Have put in Ravelston and Murrayfield in the search field on Citylets and not much coming up at the moment. Am hoping that there are a few things waiting to come on.

Families and old people - sounds like where I live now Grin

Wicketkeeper I saw the one on Gardiner Road and it had a very odd layout. I believe it may still be available. But the road did look lovely.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, I've always thought it looked interesting whenever I e walked past, and then when I had a nosy at the schedule, I thought the layout was a bit odd too. But it is a really nice road - dead quiet, but so close to the main road. And Blackhall Primary is meant to be excellent. Good luck with it all!
