Primary School Admissions Notifcations - how do we find out?

Stase · 25/04/2011 23:14

Tomorrow is the day we find out which Bristol primary DS1 has got a place at. Does anyone know how we are notified? I've looked at the website and at the email we had when we submitted our applications, and no hints...
I'm thinking if it's by post it won't be tomorrow as the Easter Hol will delay things.
Anyone know?

As ever it sounds like the council have c*cked up. Stase, have you got through to them on the phone? 5 metres must make you pretty borderline - I suppose it depends exactly where in the school they measure from. At least you should be top of the waiting list for your first choice even if you haven't got a place. I wouldn't let them get away with thinking they've offered you your first choice though, as this may affect whether they let you go on any waiting lists - not sure about that though....

CHST · 26/04/2011 16:45

mrsbjunior are you going to accept Stoke Bishop? It would be lovely to know someone going there. It said SB was my first choice though when E was!!!
Massive cock up..we are not the only ones with this prob

CHST · 26/04/2011 17:13

I have had a correction email now stating that it is indeed my second preference

mrsbjunior · 26/04/2011 17:17

I am going to accept SB but see where I would be on the E waiting list. According to one website we missed out by 12 metres! We have had an email from the council to say that they have c**ked up and the preference stated on the email is wrong due to a "technical" error!!

CHST · 26/04/2011 17:44

whereabouts are you if you don't mind me asking? I'm really not sure whether to go on the waiting list for E...think a lot of people are going to

mrsbjunior · 26/04/2011 17:59

We are off Stoke Lane near the Coombe Dingle Sports Ground. i think we'll see where we are on the list and take it from there. Don't really want things to drag on and mess DS around. PM me if you want a chat

CHST · 26/04/2011 18:02

we are near there too. Will message you x

Stase · 26/04/2011 18:09

We got Luckwell, which is fine. Preferred Ashton Gate, but just missed it apparently. Not quite close enough! I got the correction email as well.
I'm telling myself that he'll be fine wherever he goes! They're both good schools, I just felt Ashton Gate was more in line with us as a family, and preferred the double form entry to the single. You can tell so little from a tour and an Ofsted report!
Hope everyone else is happy with their allocations?

I am desperately unhappy! We live 250m from the school where ds is in nursery class. Catchment 187m this year. We have fallen into a black hole - despite having 5 schools within 550m we don't appear to be close enough to any and have been allocated Greenfield in Knowle West, 2 miles away.

Ds won't be going there! We'll appeal and go on any available waiting list and home school in the meantime until we get something, but I won't send him there. How do you explain to a 3 year old that he can't stay at the school he's been at since September because we don't live close enough when we can see the school from our house?

Totally devastated.

njlmum · 27/04/2011 06:55

We didn't get any of our preferences despite being within 0.65km of all three.... and yes, we're in Henleaze. So, we've been allocated a place in a school over 5km away.... I just don't know what to think. It would be funny if it wasn't real.

Runoutofideas · 27/04/2011 07:16

njlmum - how far are you from St Ursula's? They are supposed to be taking 60 this year and the places haven't been allocated as far as I know. May be worth seeing if there is a list you can go on? Which school were you given? BW?

CHST · 27/04/2011 08:06

Njlmum I am so sorry :( what I don't understand is why Bristol council are not making provisions for this when the situation is getting worse and worse and worse....they must know a lot of people will be disappointed. The "black areas" must be pretty big this year. I know it is for Elmlea and Westbury on Trym school. As you say in your other post, it's not being able to go to school as the same children in your area. You want your child to have friends down your streets. I just hope St Ursulas will give 60 children a chance to do just that. I am feeling pretty humble I have one of my preferences

BettyButterknife · 27/04/2011 08:23

It's not like BCC weren't alerted of our children's births 4 fecking years ago! I am so devastated and so angry. Feel for you too njlmum. Fancy pooling resources and trying to find out how many of us there are in the same boat. Surely they'd have to listen to us if enough said we aren't going to accept their crappy offer and create temporary classrooms? What are you going to do?

chrisonabike · 27/04/2011 08:37

Good grief, I'm not surprised that you're both furious. What a shit situation and prize mismanagement by BCC as per usual.

It's only just dawning on me that we're going to have to move house to get 2yo DS into a school nearby when the time comes. Looking at my postcode, all four nearby infants are oversubscribed and we're in that "black hole" just that fraction too far away from any of them. And I wondered why there are no school-age children in my road...

njlmum · 27/04/2011 09:00

Thanks for the support... it does feel like a pretty hopeless situation. We're about 0.6km from St Ursula's too so we can only hope that if/when they get the go ahead from the DFE (no, that still hasn't been granted yet!!) to start the primary school there that we can get in.
I'm also furious that we moved here nearly 10 years ago well before we even thought of having children and the fact that we haven't parachuted into the area to get a school place counts for nothing.
(By the way, no offence meant to those that do move into an area to get school places - I know that is the only way to sort out a place these days and I may end up doing the same too!)

njlmum · 27/04/2011 09:05

Oh...and to answer your question Runoutofideas - we've been offered Avon Primary which is a tidy 90 minute walk! Would keep me fit I guess....

mrsscoob · 27/04/2011 09:12

There is an article on the Evening Post Website about shortage of places and I noticed this at the bottom

Have you had trouble getting a primary school place for your child? E-mail education reporter Linda Tanner on [email protected] or call 0117 934 3317.

I thought some of you maybe interested in contacting her.

mrsbjunior · 27/04/2011 09:37

Morning all,

Someone else to contact for advice is the Bristol Primary Admissions Crisis group who are based in Bishopston but had loads of similar trouble a couple of years ago and who would know lots about appeals and talking to the press etc.

Good luck, the whole situation is dire and BCC really have stuck their heads in the sand about it.

njlmum · 27/04/2011 09:39

Thanks mrsscoob. I've dropped Linda a line. I know it won't change anything, but hey, what will!?!

Kbom · 27/04/2011 11:15

Hi,
I would recommend you stay on the waiting list for Ashton Gate. We had the same problem last year and missed out by0.05km. We were offered Ashton Vale but didn't accept, went to Appeal which unsurprisingly was unsuccessful, but got into AG 2 weeks after the start of term. The waiting is rely hard as you move up and down dependent on other late applications but it's worth it if you have the patience and can handle the stress. AG is a brilliant school and even though my daughter started slightly later she has settles really well. Good luck.

izzybeebristol · 27/04/2011 18:22

as of yet i am still waiting to find out whats going on. were refused to even apply for our school choice 10min walk away as its in bristol council and i live under south glos.. told direct by school had no chance as turned people away last year. the 3 weve put down are 30min walk away... why cant they just set up a call centre for us to find out if they are taking so long in letting people know? so frustrating!!!
