Dunnard Street, St Charles Primary or move?

We have put a placing request into Hillhead Primary but have been told that it is looking very unlikely that dd will get in. It is very over subscribed this year apparently, I guess the shiny new building in the park attracted more people than they anticipated . This would leave us the option of Dunnard St Primary or St Charles Primary. Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) of either school? Am gutted that before this Hillhead managed to accept every placing request they recieved. Damn new school is too small. Grrr.

Is it St Charles Primary in North Kelvinside? If so I went there many moons ago, left 1982 Blush. I would imagine the teaching etc. is much changed now. I was at that school so long ago that the head mistress was a nun. There was a mixture of kids. Some coming from quite affluent houses, some not. The catchment covers a little bit of North Kelvinside and the rest Maryhill.

My neighbours child went to the speach and language unit within the school for a few years. Part of the school has been given over to a school for children with speach and language difficulties. She said that the unit stressed it was not StCharles Primary but she could not sing the praises of the unit and the school highly enough.

I know this isn't much help but just thought I would let you know that I went to that primary and I have not turned out too badly Hmm

Thank you letsgetloud Smile. That sounds quite positive.

I have freinds with children at St Charles and Dunard Street and they are very positive about it. Mixed catchment etc. I'd say the St Charles building is in better nick. Go and visit, talk to the staff.

i'd be interested in this too as i live in between both, though still have a couple of years before i have to seriously think about it......

crimsville · 18/04/2011 22:34

oh sorry to hear about that-I was told that would happen this year. I bet it will be that way for a few years.

I am not keen on Dunard. I've heard some good things about St Charles but have also been told that if you child is very bright they might not get "stretched"....whatever the hell that means at such a young age. The religious component is much more of a sticking point for me.

If we don't get into Hillhead, I expect we will move when DD is in P1 or P2.

Can I ask how you found out your dd wasn't likely to get in? We are still waiting to hear and were told they would not send out letters until last week of April??

NormanTebbit · 20/04/2011 13:34

All I know is that they have had a huge number of applications but that they can accommodate most of them with an extra class. The school is waiting to hear from the council about numbers. So all is not lost. Smile

I always end up popping on to these threads - ESP if you are in the area though we are southside - if you have a year or more to go, then do consider glaasgow Gaelic! I have 3 kids there doing fab, couldn't be happier. You might need to think about nursery application now as also oversubscribed - all of p 123 now on 3 classes, but brilliant school!
