Renting in East Renfrewshire

Hi all,
I'm looking for a house in Clarkston and Busby to rent (thought not ruling out Newton Mearns and Eaglesham) but the hunt is not going well.

I had a list of 6 houses this morning to call up the agents and ask for a viewing but every one of them had already gone!

I've been looking mainly at rightmove but also s1homes and agents websites. Some agents are happy to give alerts with new properties but lots aren't bothered - I don't think they need to.

So I'm asking if anyone has some local knowledge? Is there a local paper people advertise in or some local shops with cards in the windows?

I really want this area and am about to accept an offer on my house which gives my until mid June to find somewhere which is relieving the panic a little bit but I'd like to get DD's school for next year organised before the summer holidays

Any tips or advice? I'd be grateful for your help, I had fantastic help here before so I'm back for more, thanks Smile

The Eastwood Extra is the local paper.

I don't think anywhere has adverts in the windows etc- the most likely one would be the spar just off Clarkston toll.

I would consider canvassing some of the lesser known private landlord agents, it might mean a lot of phonecalls and them having nothing in your area but gut feeling is that it would be quite fruitful.

Otherwise I don't really know much about renting apart from no property stays vacant for very long in East Renfrewshire!

Hopefully someone will pop along soon with some more to the point advice! x

Up until a couple of months ago I often saw 'to let' signs up. Granted not loads but quite a few. However they are not often up for long.

Twice I saw private to let signs up. If I see anymore I will let you know.

Have you also thought of Netherlee. Lovely houses and good school there too, then same secondaries as Clarkston and Busby. I think that is a G44 postcode.

bethelbeth · 14/03/2011 22:07

I agree- there's some fab houses in Netherlee, it's slightly less conspicuous as well ifyswim

mmsmum · 15/03/2011 12:34

Hi

Thanks for the response!

I found the Eastwood Extra online and did a property search, no results but I'll keep checking.

I did a google search on agents yesterday and spent a few hours sending emails and phoning up but no one has anything.

Netherlee comes up in my searches but I wasn't sure if it was a distinctly different area or not. There are two properties at the moment, one is a flat that's already gone and the other is a stunning house but about £200 out of my budget. I know the area a little bit but think I need to go on a tour to find out more.

My head is spinning trying to juggle so many things!

I wasn't sure if houses are more expensive in Netherlee than Clarkston (I had a suspicion they were) as houses are lovely.

Giffnock, Clarkston and Busby children all go to the same secondaries. Either Williamwood or StNinians.

Primary schools differ slightly, but all have great names. I think part of Eaglesham maybe in the same secondary catchment area.

Hope you find something soon. If I see anything I will post on here.

Here is one Busby also School catchment by street HTH.

seb1 · 15/03/2011 14:57

Williamwood catchment

seb1 · 15/03/2011 14:59

Another Williamwood catchment

letsgetloud · 15/03/2011 16:13

I think the Struma Drive one maybe let again. I know there was a sign for a while in it and now people are living there. Unless the lease is up again.

Good luck.

mmsmum · 15/03/2011 16:43

Thank you!

Riverside Gardens and Cartside Road are gone, I called about them yesterday. I also spoke to an agent about Struma Drive it is pushing the budget a bit and it's also furnished so I decided not to pursue it. Maybe the lease is up again as it was available yesterday.

Thanks so much for the catchment areas, I'd found that before and then lost it so this time it's saved and bookmarked Smile

Letsgetloud I called East Ren. council yesterday to ask about Eaglesham, I think that despite some of it being closer to Williamwood is it in the catchment for Mearns Castle, my worry was how the kids got to school along country roads but they said they put on a bus.

Private let you've probably seen it.

mmsmum · 17/03/2011 20:45

I saw that one Seb and called about it, maybe two weeks ago, and it was taken. It might have been too small anyway (makes self feel better lol)

I don't think there has been anything new this week but I'll be watching on Saturday as there seemed to be a few coming on at the end of last week

Hi mmsmum-

I saw a fine holm to let sign today in clarkston. I have found a house for let on their website in Clarkston. Don't know how to do much on the computer so will just copy and paste below.

Monthly rental of £535
10 Greenbank Court, Hill Crescent, Clarkston, GLASGOW, Lanarkshire, G76 8DQ, Scotland.

Sorry you will need to look the company up. When I was searching for above I came across a few in Newton Mearns. Also might have seen one or two in Netherlee. Maybe you would be best to phone them and see what they have.

Hopefully you will have something already if not good luck with your search.

Hi mmsmum

You do realise, don't you, that renting or buying a house now in the catchment area of these school will not guarantee your dd a place in first year for this august? AFAIK the closing date for applications is past and placing requests will be given In the next few weeks. I don't the school keep back places for children whose families move into the area

There are lots of people doing what you are doing, trying to rent a property to get their child into a good school. Nothing wrong with that. But it means that you Are facing a lot of competition and the local authority are used to it and not particularly sympathetic

You really REALLY need to get a move on if you want to get your dd into williamwood, means castle or st ninians. If it takes you 4 weeks to find a property, a week or two to do landlords checks etc and move, you will applying in mid may. BTW you need a copy of a rental agreement that extends beyond mid august and a child benefit letter for the correct address, a birth certificate and I think a baptism certificate ( if relevant)

HTH

KristinaM · 26/03/2011 11:13

Williamwood catchmmet, 2 beds, £525 per month
here

KristinaM · 26/03/2011 23:45

Oh I just saw that you have a dog. Forget that last one then, no pets allowed

And you say you hate flats. Is that all flats, or just tenements?

vitalite · 01/04/2011 23:32

Kristina M is right, we have just bought a house in the Stamperland area, in the Netherlee primary catchment area, moving in mid May and found out today that there are literally no spaces at Netherlee primary despite being in the catchment area! East ren will have to offer my son a space at another primary in East ren along with free transport to that school but I'm concerned as to which school that will end up being. If there is a space at Carolside or Busby then alls well but I don't fancy him going to Thornliebank or Barrhead! But he does have a couple of years left at Primary and he should still be ok to get into Williamwood as we will be living in the catchment, just won't necessarily get to know his classmates beforehand which I was hoping for.

Good luck with your search though.

KristinaM · 02/04/2011 05:31

Vitalite if your son is going into p6 there is a good chance that a space will open up before august at nether lee. AFAIK busby primary is not full either

Usually it's just p1and s1that are massively over subscribed

Have you applied for a place for him yet ? Or did you just phone the school and ask? You need to get the paperwork in ASAP, though I don't think they will confirm a place until you have actually moved in and have all the relevant documents
