Just noticed that Hayes in Shawlands has shut down! God knows how much money I have spent in there over the year but every penny has been worth it. Best clothes shop ever, I'm very sad :(

I thought the staff were a bit snotty to be honest, I bought a viv westwood dress from them a couple of years ago and the service was so bad that I've never ventured in again.

I daresay that a lot of other people probably felt the same.

It's sad that Shawlands has lost another retailer though- they're getting thin on the ground these days.

Bideyin · 04/03/2011 15:22

Really bethelbeth? I'm surprised because one of the reasons I liked the place was that the staff were pleasant, left you alone and you never felt you had to buy anything when you went in. They also had a really good selecetion of stuff.

I had just been recommended it as a good place for me to go to get something a bit different :(

ssd · 04/03/2011 17:59

its one of those shops I knew I'd never be able to afford/fit anything so never went in!

Bideyin · 04/03/2011 18:12

They did brilliant sales :(

And the woman who owned it used to be in Brookside.

Walked by it today. Lots of mail stacking up behind the shutters. I never went in either as I was also convinced I wouldn't fit into anything. Grin It is a shame that it's gone although there seem to be quite a few independent clothes shops around that part of Kilmarnock Road now. Noticed another one today near the PDSA/Co-op.

Who did the owner play in Brookside Bideyin?? (nosey Blush)

MintChocAddict · 04/03/2011 23:24

Although think that other clothes shop is still on Pollokshaws Road and not Kilmarnock Road.

Talking of Shawlands, DS was really staring in the window of the Granary today and refused to move on. Turns out DH had previously tipped him off about the train track that runs around above the bar. I'd never noticed that either. Must walk around with my eyes shut!

She lived in the house with Pat and the other girl who got shot? It was in the eighties and she was blonde with a curly perm (was her name Sandra?)

She's really nice irl actually but I was always a bit starstruck as I loved early years Brookside.

All my favourite clothes come from that shop. Also I need to say that I'm actually a bit shocked by bethelbeth's comment as I have been shopping at Hayes for more than 10 years and never ever encountered any snootiness at all!

I didn't know about the train track either MintChoc, must have a look.

Ahh, I think I remember her from Brookie in the 80s too Bidey. (old lady emoticon) Can't remember her name though, although I have to admit that I did just try to wiki/google 'Brookside characters' to find out. Blush

Did find out though that there was a Brookside character who was played by an actress called Beverley Hills - (seriously Shock)

I've been shopping in shawlands for 10+ years as well bideyin. Different strokes for different folks and whatnot but the business was obviously not sustainable.
Another shop just up the road closed recently too- think it was called regalia.

Stac2011 · 05/03/2011 01:53

is that the one that had the kids shop too? If it is i used to get ds stuff from there. Didnt go into the other part as i wouldnt have fit the clothes. Shawlands is so different now though, there used to be some ok shops there. In saying that i haven't been there since last year

Bideyin · 05/03/2011 09:15

Ha mintchoc. I do know her RL name but don't want to post it.

bethel I said I'd shopped in Hayes (not Shawlands) for 10 years + and so had had a lot of contact with the owner and staff. I am just surprised/shocked that my experience was so different from yours.

I think the general effects of the recession plus the terrible weather at their busiest time of year finally tipped them over the edge. I really liked having somewhere reliable locally to shop for clothes as I generally can't be arsed traipsing around town.

Stac there did used to be a kids shop as well but it didn't last that long.

Hmm Hayes is in Shawlands so I didn't really see the need for that to be stipulated. But thanks- just in case I'd forgotten.

prettybird · 05/03/2011 18:36

Bethelbeth - maybe you looked too young and/or not wealthy enough Wink

Bideyin · 05/03/2011 18:54

Bethelbeth, my actual point was that I have shopped a lot in that particular shop (not area) over many many years and not had a bad experience so perhaps your single bad experience was an unusual occurence?

So no need for the eye rolling :)

I used to love popping into Shawlands for the Woolies in the Arcade. Haven't been for a long time now, last time I went it was looking really run down but the shops were filled and busy with shoppers
