Nice restaurants in York (preferably Italian)?

Can anybody recommend any nice restaurants in the centre of York please?

We're going on Thursday this week and so will be needing somewhere to eat on the Thursday night.

Preferably an Italian, and preferably with a happy hour because we're skint

We're staying near the river (opposite the Slug and Lettuce) so somewhere within walking distance of there please!

TIA

I went to a good Italian restaurant on the Shambles, but that was a lifetime ago in the BC (before children) years. I think it's called Ristorante Bari.

Also Pizza Express in city centre (you can usually get a 2for1 voucher from their website).

Thanks mumdebump, not really keen on Pizza Express though.

Will look into the Shambles one though!

Best Italian in York is L'Antica Locanda on the Shambles. It doesn't do pizza, but very lovely Sardinian pasta, fish and meat, with an exuberant and charming maitre d' called Gianni! It's really good food, and really not that expensive for what it is. It looks like a sandwich bar from the outside, but has a lovely small trattoria upstairs.

THere's a larger one on Petergate which is good too - I think it's called La Vecchia Scuola?? And Lo Spuntino on Blossom St is pretty good too.

Have a good evening!

(PS not sure which ones do early bird deals, but most places do in this skint times, so might be worth looking on their websites?)

Le Bari is fab!
Not sure how cheap, but the pasta is v. nice.
