Does anyone have any knowledge of this school and what it's like? Cheers.

Or Drummond?

Bumping for you

nineyearoldsarerude · 09/02/2011 23:24

Thank you-it looks like noone on mumsnet sends their kids there though! Shame as I'd love to live near the Botanics.

Have only heard about it bcos of music school and wonder about possibilities for dd1 although that is still some way away (and we have not even moved to E/burgh yet!)

Shitemum · 09/02/2011 23:50

I went there {cough} years ago. It's been rebuilt recently and morale has risen.
As good a school as any I believe. I know a few people whose kids go there but mine are still at primary so I don't really hear much about Broughton.
Drummond is smaller I think.
Sorry not very helpful.

nineyearoldsarerude · 10/02/2011 09:12

Thank you both-I didn't know about the music school.

Thanks Rhadegunde, I can see what you mean about the catchments taking in kids from all areas. I have lived in a couple of different places in Edinburgh but we moved out before my children started school so I don't have any knowledge of the schools.
It's all a bit of a dream at the moment though as technically we don't have a good enough reason to move!

Iggi2011 · 10/02/2011 16:24

I'd be happy to send DS to either of these schools.

kaumana · 10/02/2011 17:31

I've only heard of Broughton because of the music school, though friends of mine have fencing lessons there at night.

Sorry, not much help...

nineyearoldsarerude · 10/02/2011 19:54

Well, I COULD do with a new pastime!

hear hear Rhadegunde! Very few bad schools...lots of misinformed gossip !

pippitysqueakity · 16/02/2011 10:21

Was at Drummond years ago, did me fine at time ( went on to uni, etc ). Broughton now my DDs local school in a few years, has good rep and lovely new build. Drummond been developed, but still housed in old building (which does look good). Was one of schools earmarked for closure in BIG SCARE of 2009, but this seems to have been shelved at mo, (altho' a few lovely schools did close last summer). In area is also Craigroyston, even newer build than Broughton, with pool I believe...Can get to beach, AND Botanics!!

nineyearoldsarerude · 16/02/2011 11:08

Thanks, good to hear good things about these schools. I'd have my reservations about Craigroyston though-isn't that area still quite dodgy?

pippitysqueakity · 16/02/2011 12:10

Again, undergoing redevelopment, but perhaps not Edinburgh's finet area...

pippitysqueakity · 17/02/2011 11:01

That would be finest...

nineyearoldsarerude · 17/02/2011 13:43

Definitely not the finest! Still searching...

ratspeaker · 19/02/2011 14:08

What about Leith Academy?
Has a pool onsite
The central corridor is an atrium with plants so it has an airy feel to it
I found the staff quite supportive

nineyearoldsarerude · 19/02/2011 14:20

I've heard good things about it too-don't think I could convince my husband though. He is sooo picky!

Iggi2011 · 23/02/2011 22:41

Are you looking for somewhere to live near a school you like, or hoping to make an out-of-catchment placing request? (no guarantee you'll get in).
When Drummond was reburbished the original frontage had to be left intact, as it is listed (piece of useless local knowledge)

nineyearoldsarerude · 24/02/2011 11:06

I wouldn't risk out of catchment. Just trying to figure out if the (affordable) places I like are near decent schools first. Have found a place I like (good catchment I think) but not sure if it's affordable. Haven't seen it in the flesh yet though-perhaps I will hate it and save myself some heartache!

Portobello High is to be rebuilt and resited just off Milton Road, to have pitches and poll onsite
Pretty big catchment area

I think every secondary will have its numpties as well as its outstanding pupils
There also seems to be "fashions" in which school is regarded as the best, as Rhadegunde said very few are "bad"

ratspeaker · 24/02/2011 19:57
