Hi wonder if anyone with local knowledge could help please.

We live down South but dh got new job where he needs a base up north. Have seen apartments to rent in Reddish (I think called Victoria Mills) that look nice/reasonable price.

Just wondered if anyone has any local knowledge of how safe etc. it is.

Tia

alypaly · 28/11/2010 00:50

you are not far off levenshulme which does have alot of problems. depends what you are used to.

my boyfriend lives in burnage which is nect to levenshulme and he hates it

kettlecrisps · 28/11/2010 12:27

Oh I wasn't expecting replies so quickly. Thanks for that. Handy to have your inside knowledge.

I've actually started looking at Warrington now. Wonder if you know whether that's considered ok?

DH will literally need it just as somewhere to rest head as he will be all over the place Leeds/Birmingham flying to Edinburgh etc.

So really just looking for somewhere reasonably safe - just that inside knowledge really as I know very well which London areas to avoid for crime etc.. When looking somewhere completely new it's obviously very difficult so your opinions really appreciated.

parts of warrington are nice..can be a bit off the beaten track depending on where you are.i live in Cheadle Hulme which is 10 minutes from Manchester airport and really nice. very central for rail, airport and manchester town centre/stockport and close to wilmslow bramhall ,alderley edge all of which are lovely areas.

on the main train line from london in cheadle hulme.

are you buying or renting

kettlecrisps · 29/11/2010 10:44

Oh thanks that's interesting. I've been looking at all the areas you've mentioned yesterday and thought they look more promising. They seem much more like where we live now and what we'd be comfortable with.

However the problem is as it's going to be an extra expense (dh will rent) have been looking at the cheaper options available as by the time council tax added it all takes a big chunk out of the salary. (He will probably only be sleeping there three nights a week and if in Ediburgh etc then he'd be there less so it's hard to throw more money than you'd like to spend at it.)

All of us moving up not an option for next couple of years as dc year 10 at school gcses etc.

I think we're going to have to bite the bullet and spend a bit more really. Trying to find studio/1 bed for between 400-500 seems to be more in the less desirable parts and need to spend 650 plus to get somewhere that feels def safe? Would you agree with that?

i.e. found somewhere in Warrington looked really nice and clean, furnished - for £425! Seemed perfect did a search on the address and came up with a scumbag living at the same block that was being charged with allowing his dog to maul a man - in broad daylight no hiding in the shadows it seems required (man later died from the injuries)oh and he sells drugs from the premises!!

Bit scary to think I could have moved dh in next door and been pleased with my research!

I think next month he'll start off by staying in some of these apart-hotels so he get's a kitchen etc. and look a bit closer at the areas you mentioned as they do look nice and the airport is convenient.

Found one bit too convenient for the airport -an annexe (but as you pan out from the map link you think it's a road and it's actually the runway!).

That's a point actually - is there much airport noise around Cheadle during night hours?

If you're still reading! One last stab at the cheaper properties have seen an area of Wilmslow I think called Summerfields that has studios for about £400 - do you know if that's considered a safe -ish area or not? Also Bollington seems quite attractive - do you have any opinions on that area please?

I know it's the same everywhere - good bits next to bad bits and your inside knowledge is really appreciated. Cheers!

Summerfields is on the outskirts of wilmslow on the border with handforth. Parts of handforth used to be a problem but summerfields which is an estate that has been built by Jones homes is fine and there are some nice little houses on it. Alot of colleaguse have lived on there over the years and i also nearly bought a house on there myself.(but couldnt afford it). Again it is really central for everything and would be a good base.

Bollington is alot more countrified and more towards Macclesfield which has a really good shopping centre. It is a bit quiet and almost like an isolated community. People are a bit clique and slightly more difficult to get to know.

Cheadle Hulme does get aircraft but i have lived here for 28 years and it doesnt really bother me especially in the winter. depends which way they take off. Sometimes i can see them and not hear them. if the wind changes they come nearer to my house.

contact Roger Deans estate agents in Heald Green and speak to a lady called Carol. She will send you info on flats or appts in the area or they may even have a website. My boyfriend recently rented a flat for £495 a month....unfurnished, whilst his house was renovated. it was clean, warm and quiet but nothing to write home about.

emerson holdings may have some appartments in most areas.

if you find anywhere..i am pleased to give my opinion if it helps. will try and keep my place on here so i can help

kettlecrisps · 29/11/2010 19:30

Thanks so much for all your help Aly. We've certainly got a clearer picture now.

Having spent all weekend moving here, there and everywhere (only in my mind that is) plus all the info. you've provided we're feeling much better informed.

He'll be off there towards the end of December staying in apart-hotels and hotels at first and we'll start having a proper nose around in person I think to get to know places better.

Thanks again for sharing your local knowledge.

I may resurrect this thread if you're still around - once we've been up to Manchester area and nosed around in Jan.

alypaly · 30/11/2010 15:03

put in ...to rent...wilmslow and then look at brackenwood mews.

alypaly · 30/11/2010 15:06

or there is one called summerfield village court.

alypaly · 30/11/2010 15:16

another area to look is macclesfield.
use the same website and look in macclesfield ,appts to rent and Appt & Green Meadows comes up.

I know it is probably at the top of what you want to pay. But i know these appts. They are lovely. off road parking, very private. lovely owners. Again built by Jones homes. approx 17 years old.

the reason i know these well is that my ex who i am in regular contact with lives in appt 6 which is on the top floor.

i can highly recommend them. there are alot of professional people there so they are quiet.

alypaly · 30/11/2010 15:17

im not on commision BTW just sat at home twiddling my thumbs, trying to get a job as the company i work for is about to go bankrupt. am getting fed up with applying on line and getting nowhere.

kettlecrisps · 02/12/2010 09:59

Oh hi just seen this. Lots to keep me busy here.

Very sorry to hear about the job hunting being slow going. It must feel like walking in treacle what with the weather conditions bringing everything to a halt at the moment.

Wishing you lots of luck.
