Rented house?

Don't know if I'm allowed to post this here so let me know if not...

I'm from Edinburgh but have been living down south for 15+ years. Desperate to move home now we have DD.

We want to rent for first 6-12 months before buying (to avoid nightmare chain selling in England etc).

So we're looking for a house to rent in Edinburgh - 3+ bedrooms, 2 reception, garden & parking. Budget c. £1500/mth. Me & DH plus DD 22m. Non-smokers, ready to move now.

Am looking on Citylets, ESPC etc but if anyone knows of anything else available or likely to be available would love to get details - thanks.

hi there,
not sure i can be much help but we have just moved to Edinburgh from England and managed to avoid that nightmare chain thing but living with the in-laws for 6 weeks but we did a LOT of looking at places to rent as well as buy and I would really recommend lettingweb.com as it seemed to have the most comprehensive listings of rentals, although citylets is good too. On that budget i think you should find somewhere really decent - do you know which areas you'd like to live in?
We are at the end of stockbridge/comely bank and loving it here but had a much smaller budget than you and actually buying was a cheaper option for us than renting so we took the plunge not knowing the city at all.
So far its working out!
Anyway if i can be of more help oe you'd like to meet a friendly face then just send me a message thru the PM thing.
all the best! Smile

Hi there, thanks for your message - I remember seeing your posts about moving to Edinburgh and was v jealous as we are desperate to move home!

I hadn't heard of lettingweb before, so will definitely have a look there later on, thanks for the tip.

I also thought it might be worth posting on here in case anyone had been trying to sell and was now thinking of renting - seems to be quite common as I'm seeing houses to rent that we'd seen for sale over the summer.

We're fairly flexible on location as long as it's actually in Edinburgh, ideal areas would be Morningside/Bruntsfield/Stockbridge/Comely Bank so all the usual suspects. You've picked a lovely part of town and great for bringing up wee ones, vg fish shop and butcher in Stockbridge too!

Hope you are enjoying the big change of scene, will let you know how we get on and when we are eventually on our way to Edinburgh.

Hi,

Lettingweb is a great website.
There's also s1 homes www.s1rental.com/

We also live in Stockbridge/Comely Bank and we love it. Very friendly area and close to town.
Good luck!

Fairylights maybe we are neighbours and we don't know ;)

tiokiko meant to say before - you probably already know this but the buying process up here is SOOO much quicker than down south, if you can find somewhere to live/have family you could stay with for a short time it might be worth considering buying?
From the day we put the offer in on this house to the day we moved in was literally a month and a day! We put the offer in the day our contracts were exchanged down south although we didn't complete for a couple of weeks.
But renting does give you good time to suss out whether you like an area for sure or not - we were keen to settle so ds could get going in the nursery class in school but your dd is younger so that isn't such a big thing for you I guess. Anyway, enough of my rambling..! all the best Smile

I love the buying process in Scotland (but am biased, I know).

We're renting as we will need more £ to get the right sort of house in Edinburgh than we do down here and will be raising money through our business so it's not straightforward.

The thought of trying to combine that with selling in England and buying Scotland is a bit hideous so thought we would be best off renting for 6m so we have somewhere to live (even though it might not be the area or type of house we will eventually buy). No room at my folks' house so that's not an option. My brother has a second home (flat) in Edin so we could use that if it was v short term but all round we are up for renting once we find the right place.

Hoping to get this place on the market in the next couple of weeks so things can get moving!

Thanks for all your friendly comments, getting excited about the move back now!

tiokiko good luck!

fairylights I do think we live very nearby, almost across the road. Fancy a coffee one of days?

fairylights · 10/10/2010 21:37

ooh yes evitas that would be lovely!! i bet we have passed in the street! i will PM you.. Smile

fairylights · 10/10/2010 21:40

and tiokiko - yes that def sounds like the best plan in your situation..
and will be lovely if you can really get the house you would want up here, we had to compromise so much because edinburgh he is SO much more expensive than where we moved from..(unlike london for you!) but i'm hopeful that one fine day we might be able to afford the kind of home we would really like, in the mean time living in Edinburgh is enough compensation Smile
