Hello I was wondering if anybody could recommend somewhere nice for a Friday night meal in North Essex/Suffolk border - just DH and I. We live just south of Colchester.

How about The Crown in Stoke by Nayland or the newly re-opened Rose and Crown in Great Horksley?

Mung · 07/09/2010 17:42

I second the Crown or the Anchor in Nayland. There is also The Boat House in Dedham or Milsoms /Maioson Talbooth

MadameCastafiore · 07/09/2010 17:47

Milsoms would be my pick - we went there for our anniversary a short while ago and it was lovely.

Lion Inn in Boreham is good too but more a family place not romantic like Milsoms.

Smiths in Ongar is good but may be too far out - is the sort of place you go to gawp at the women who look like they have stepped out of Footballers Wives - the food is great too but the women - that is entertainment all in it's self!

Alouiseg · 07/09/2010 18:05

Only problem with Milsoms is that you can't book, so get there early and be prepared to wait a bit. Le Talbooth for a very grown up evening.

Banquet 1408 is great Chinese food with easy parking.

Don't bother with The Lexden Crown, I've been there 4 times since it wa refurbed, rubbish every time.

Alouiseg · 07/09/2010 18:06

Baumanns in Coggeshall is bloody fantastic food, I think. Great wine list too :)

drivingmissdaisy · 07/09/2010 21:47

Thanks for all the replies, we go to Baumanns quite a lot and although always fantastic we fancied a change. That's a shame that you can't book Milsoms as it looks really lovely. Will check out all the others though. Smiths in Ongar sounds great if only for the people watching!

The Crown at Stoke by Nayland is fantastic. It would be my choice every time, if Le Talbooth is a bit OTT.

Lian's chinese in Witham is very good, and so is the Blue Strawberry in Hatfield Peverel.

Or there's the Bulmer Fox, in Bulmer, Sudbury. Lovely food but not big on cosy atmosphere - the Crown feels more intimate.

The Peldon Rose is supposed to be good as well, though I've not been.

Or the Compasses at Pattiswick (off the A120 before Braintree) is lovely but maybe a bit off the beaten track for you.

Sawyer64 · 08/09/2010 13:52

Smiths in Ongar is good for spotting Celebs too,not just Footballer type wives!

We had a great meal in The Red Lion, and also The George Hotel, both in Colchester High Street.

FellatioNelson · 08/09/2010 15:27

What slebs? Anyone decent? I might have to go now, just so I can look through them and pretend I haven't noticed/recognised them, in my ultra-cool nonchalant way. Mind you, if they are HEAT or WAG style slebs there's a very real chance I genuinely will have no idea who they are. I'm just so classy and sophisticated, and unadulterated by such low-brow twaddle. Grin

The angel in Stoke by nayland. We went there stayed overnight and had a special overnight deal with dinner and champagne and drinks included. Food was gorgeous and room was lovely too

FellatioNelson · 09/09/2010 09:56

I've often wanted to go in there, but once I'm in Nayland I can't resist going in the Crown instead. I'm always worried that if I go over the road I'll be disappointed, and cross that I didn't go to the Crown instead!

Alouiseg · 09/09/2010 10:06

We used to go to The Angel before the crown opened but people would hover over my table and ask when we were leaving...............that peed me off so we stopped going.

I think we should go to Smiths for lunch one day Fellatio, obviously take a copy of Hello, Ok, and Heat with us as a reference.

Nettiespagetti · 09/09/2010 10:55

Hmm yes I don't think I'd be too happy with that. We went in June to the angel and it was very nice. I felt quite welcome. Never tried any others.

FellatioNelson · 09/09/2010 11:59

Yes, lets Alouiseg. In fact, if we wear our best frocks and big dark glasses (and lose another three stone each) people might think we are the celebs.Grin

I am not suggesting you/we are fat, BTW, perish the thought, only that celebs are very very thin.

FellatioNelson · 09/09/2010 12:12

And can I just smugly announce that I can home from my holiday the same weight as I went, while we are on the subject?Grin

Don't know how that happened - I ate bread and ice cream and allsorts (but not silly amounts). It must have been the heat. Confused

Alouiseg · 09/09/2010 16:12

You Jammy cow! I put on half a stone! I have lost it now, just got to work on the 10lbs I managed to gain in the run up to it. Hmm

Sawyer64 · 09/09/2010 21:08

The Celebs that go to The Smiths are Alan Sugar, and Becks and Posh.....
Grin

Alouiseg · 09/09/2010 21:16

So it's the grown ups version of Faces.

FellatioNelson · 09/09/2010 22:30

Which one will you be A? Alan or Posh?Grin Do you think we'll pull it off between us? I'm sure I keep a lollipop head in my wardrobe for emergencies.

FellatioNelson · 09/09/2010 22:31

What's Faces? (stamps foot) What kind of a rubbish Essex girl am I? I'm supposed to know this stuff.

Alouiseg · 09/09/2010 22:41

Faces is a nightclub in Gants Hill that lots of minor slebs frequent. I used to grace it with my presence in my heyday Hmm

I think I'll be Alan when we go for lunch as I'm beginning to grow a luxuriant beard that he would be proud of :o

FellatioNelson · 09/09/2010 22:46

Stop it - you are making me snort rather unattractively. And dribble in my pants a
bit.

Oh you poor love. Can't you go down to Wendy's and get her to wax it off?Grin
