Has anyone else noticed the swarms of flying ants today?

Yes have noticed. My DS took about 4 hours walking to the Botanics because he had to poke a stick in every nest he spotted - eventually said that he got bitten by one (but I am a little dubious!)

I was actually going to post on Mumsnet to ask if there were any entymologists who might be able to explain "what is a flying ant?". I mean, is it an ordinary ant that is suddenly blessed with wings or is it a particular type of ant? It's wierd the way they all come out together, like they've just got the message from the mothership...

I thought it was just us

SlummyMummyAndProud · 07/08/2010 18:51

Just googled it.

Aparantly there is a day every year that they mate. Its different every year, something to do with the weather.

They can bite but its not serious.

It made the news in 2004 cos it so bad.

MintChocAddict · 07/08/2010 20:37

They were all over the place on the Southside too. Typical that it's the first nice sunny days for ages!!

Yes!! They are here at Loch Lomond, and I was in Clydebank earlier and it was much worse there. I had them in my hair and two of them flew into my face!!

I think you're right about it being an occasional thing. Hopefully they'll be gone soon.

smallorange · 07/08/2010 21:15

Yup all over Glasgow Green too. Had to go into a pub to get away from them...

YourCallIsImportant · 07/08/2010 22:03

Ha ha, we went to the pub too!!

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 07/08/2010 22:07

They were at it out here near Paisley, too. Most of them seem to have gone now - they were driving the dog mad, because they kept flying away when she tried to catch them.

radioblahblah · 07/08/2010 22:25

yep, hunners round here, southside also.
