Hi I just joined mumsnet tonight, the first thing I searched on was Kyphosis, and you came up. I know your post was a while ago, but hopefully you're still a member?
My son (16) was also diagnosed with Scheuermann's Kyphosis last year (August). We're in Edinburgh, and the spinal deformities unit at the sick kids hospital seems to do a great job. He's just been placed on the waiting list for an op. to put bone grafts between the wedge shaped vertebrae and put titanium rods either side to straighten his spine (currently 81 degree curve} He could wait a year for the op.
We know a few families locally whose kids have been through a similar op, but for scoliosis, under the same spinal team, and they speak very highly of the results.
The big worry is whether having the op is the right decision. I think on balance his life later on will be improved by it, but while he's young it's going to affect some of the stuff he likes to do (but then, the kyphosis itself is starting to do that)
He's getting frequent back pain now, and the distortion in other areas (chest muscles, hamstrings) is becoming worse, so I really hope the op will help all of that.
How's your son getting along with it? Are you having a similar experience?
