Are there any Sydney MNers out there?

bunnygirl80 · 01/03/2010 06:38

I moved to Sydney at the end of November last year. I was wondering if there are any MNers here.

I'm jealous as the Adelaide MNers have there own thread and are having a meet up!! My competitive streak makes me feel like those of us in Sydney/NSW should do the same

Oh, sad. DD and her friends have decided they too want a bookclub, and DD is having the first one here on Sat 27th.

The Opera Bar is a fab place to meet, lunch there always seems to spread into dinner.

I'll keep an eye out for updates on future drinks.

Good luck, abithormonal!

thumbwitch · 13/03/2010 07:41

Sounds like a good plan to me - shame you can't manage it, LoremIpsum - put it in your diary just in case things go pearshaped with your DD's plans, hey?

So - potentially 4 of us, new babies allowing - sounds good! Are we aiming to have lunch at the opera bar? In which case, shall we say 12 or 12:30 for meeting? Does it need booking?

bunnygirl80 · 14/03/2010 07:58

I think 12:30 for meeting.

Not sure how busy it normally gets at lunchtime - I've only ever been in the evenings before. Maybe someone who's more of a been there more often will know?

abithormonal · 16/03/2010 21:58

I can't say I go there often, but I have never had a problem getting somewhere to sit. There is no booking available.

So how do we go about recognising each other, I know I'm pretty easy to spot because I'm huge.

bunnygirl80 · 16/03/2010 23:53

I was going to ask how we will recognise each other - DH reckons I should just look out for the group of hairy truckers!

Perhaps one of us could bring a sign saying MN meetup? Or should we all wear a certain colour and have a codeword like secret service agents?

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 18/03/2010 22:22

love the codeword plan! That could raise a few eyebrows if we pick the wrong person/group!

I have a profile picture if that helps - at least I'll be recognisable (although chances are I will also be a few minutes late, especially with the trains and all)

We could just be unimaginative about it and wear a discreet sticker with MN on it on our lapel area? If you want to go with a colour, that's ok by me - most of my clothes are "autumn" colours though (greens, yellows, oranges, browns, deep reds) so for e.g. something bright blue or pink would be quite tricky for me (I don't have any!)

I'm quite excited about this really - my first solo trip to Sydney, apart from anything else! and then meeting some lovely MNers.

Does anyone know roughly how long it takes to get from Central Station to Circular Quay station? It takes me about 2hrs to get into Central Station and then I need to factor in the next bit as well so I'm not late!

bunnygirl80 · 19/03/2010 07:06

A sticker with MN on sounds like a good idea.

Have checked out your profile pics - your DS is a real cutie. I have a rubbish memory for faces though so will probably still fail to recognise you in RL!

It doesn't take long to circular quay station from central - maybe 5-10 minutes on the city circle. The trains are pretty regular too.

thumbwitch · 19/03/2010 12:16

aw thanks! Dh and I regularly look at each other and wonder how we got such a cute one - he got all the good genes, obviously!

Thanks for the info on the timing - helps with deciding which train I need to catch.

So - a sticker with MN on is the "code" then? That way if anyone else decides to come at the last minute they will be able to spot us easily enough as well.

bunnygirl80 · 24/03/2010 09:01

This thread's gone a bit quiet. I'm assuming we're still on for Saturday?!

I'll have to think of an interesting design for my MN sticker!!

OP posts:
abithormonal · 25/03/2010 04:27

I'm still on for Saturday but will confirm late Friday that I am not currently giving birth, if I'm not that is.

thumbwitch · 26/03/2010 00:11

I'm still on for tomorrow, yes - am getting the train about 10:15 (hopefully ) which should get me into Central at 12:11, which gives me just about long enough to get to the bar by 12:30 or just after.

I don't suppose either/any of you are going to a Coles or Woolworths that sells Boursin today, are you? If you are and you happen to see some, could you pick me up a couple of packs, just the garlic & Herbs one, and I'll pay you back tomorrow? Don't worry if you're not, I meant to ask earlier in the week, dunno where the time's gone!

Am looking forward to it!

thumbwitch · 26/03/2010 00:12

ooh, I meant to add - should we do mobile number swap just in case of incidents or accidents? If you want to, email me:
thumbwitch at live dot co dot uk. I'll then send you mine as well.

bunnygirl80 · 26/03/2010 01:00

Was wondering about swapping numbers - will email you.

Am going to Coles today, not sure if they have Boursin but it does have a massive cheese section so will have a look.

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 26/03/2010 01:43

thanks bunny!

bunnygirl80 · 26/03/2010 05:02

Good news - I have been to Coles and successfully obtained some Boursin

Just need to remember to bring it with me tomorrow

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 26/03/2010 06:56

bless you my lovely! Thank you so much.

abithormonal · 26/03/2010 09:59

No current activity of the birth giving type here so I'll be there, don't know how to message on the site or anything, but a mobile number would be useful for any last minute emergencies (not that there will be any)

thumbwitch · 26/03/2010 11:43

abithormonal - email me on above address and I will then send you my mobile and bunny's too. Failing that, give me your email address here and I will email you both numbers.

thumbwitch · 27/03/2010 11:17

Lovely day out in the Big Smoke ladies! Hope we can repeat it again soon, maybe some more can join us next time?

Good luck with the birth, abithormonal - keep up the pineapple juice etc.

bunnygirl80 · 28/03/2010 23:28

It was a great day. I paid for all of the excitement yesterday though and barely made it off the sofa all day!

Good luck abithormonal

sunnydelight · 29/03/2010 00:48

Oh no, I am so sorry I completely forgot about this. We ended up with people staying for the weekend so the whole thing just went out of my head. Glad you had fun - hope to join you next time.

thumbwitch · 30/03/2010 14:15

No worries sunnydelight - we'll just have to organise another one when abithormonal is up to it - (hope you're doing ok, btw ABH - I take it there's no news yet?)

Maybe a trip out to the Hunter Vineyards next time? See how you feel... I don't at all mind coming into Sydney though.

Eralc · 06/04/2010 12:17

Hi,

Can I join this thread too? We have just moved to Sydney (we arrived last Tuesday, so are just finding our feet), and it would be great to meet up with some people. We are staying in temporary accommodation in North Sydney at the moment, but are about to start searching for a rental property in the next few days (looking at probably North Shore at the moment, but not really narrowed it down beyond that). My son is 2, and am keen to get to know some people out here, especially now the jet lag is fading!

sunnydelight · 08/04/2010 01:50

Welcome to Sydney Eralc. We stayed in North Sydney on arrival too - it's a good place to start, especially if you're looking to live along the North Shore train line. If you want any info on suburbs ask away.

I'm afraid my kids are way past the stage of finding a 2 year old interesting, but I would be happy to meet for daytime coffee or evening wine when mine are back at school. We're in Turramurra so Chatswood would be a good half way point.

thumbwitch · 11/04/2010 00:20

Hi Eralc - welcome! I have a 2yo DS as you might have noticed from the rest of the thread but live 1.5hrs north of Sydney - not much use for random coffee but good for anyone coming up to Lake Macquarire/Hunter Valley wine region.

We went to the Royal Easter Show yesterday - if your jet lag has gone enough, try and get there before it finishes on Wednesday - our DS loved it, especially all the cows!
