Braving Austrian toddler group tomorrow -please help me with some suitable German small talk -

ds3 is now 10 months, the season is over and I can't put it off any longer. i don't think I'll know anyone there, and I need help! My German isn't great, understanding is OK, but initiating converstaion is so hard for me.

I wish I could help but I wanted to say 'good luck'! We have just moved to Austria and I speak no German yet so understand how difficult it is to meet people or actually do anything.

I think the good thing about play groups is that you can just talk about the kids - how old, what their latest action is etc.

Hupa - we didn't go as he had a high temperature and really not well so this Thursday I will brave it!

yes go on and brave it. Hard to give you set phrases because you never know what answers you'll get and need to respond to.

I would say have a few questions ready so you can leave the talking up to the other person. There will probably be a few people there who speak at least enough English to make themselves understood and they might want to practice English with you.

It is hard the first couple of times but you will soon find out if there is someone there on your wavelength.

There will likely be someone there who is happy to practice her English.

It's Thursday so perhaps she braced herself and tried it!
