have any of your children had dengue? I gather it's not as serious in children as adults, just wondering how it presents

my 10yo has high temp (103), headache, eye pain, "and it feels like my bones are all scrunched"

but he's been vomiting so I thought -- maybe just a bug

he's now asleep and cooling but I don't know if that's because of him or because he's in a cool room

anybody got any experience?

with gratitude

Oh goodness stuffit. I am no help but didn't want to read and not post. Hope it is just a bug - sounds v unpleasant. Can you get a doctor to look at him?

stuffitllama · 27/03/2009 04:22

Hi Bunny and thanks
the doc is an hour's drive
i think I'll take him for a blood test at school pick up, there's a hospital quite near
he seems cooler but I'm waiting for him to wake to see if the headache is still there
i was so relieved when he threw up

Hi Stuff, are you still there? Any sign of a rash? (Check legs and midriff)

stuffitllama · 27/03/2009 05:06

hi mango will just check

stuffitllama · 27/03/2009 05:14

no rash ..I didn't know there was a rash with dengue that is helpful to know

his temperature is down but he is quite headachey and still nauseous

OP posts:
mangolassi · 27/03/2009 05:30

Yep, rash is common but not all cases... hate to worry you but can sometimes make you vomit as well. Temp lower is good news though (but I can't do farenheit so not sure how high it was!).

How long till you can get him to hospital? Better safe than sorry.

Hope it's just bad gastro - has he said anything about joint pain since he woke up?

stuffitllama · 27/03/2009 05:53

oh dear but thank you

I suppose his temp was 40-41 and is now 38 ish?

he is very very lethargic and talking about his eyes and head hurting

OP posts:
stuffitllama · 27/03/2009 06:03

I think i'll have to rouse him and take him
dh says he will come home or help with the school run

he is never ill so i know he really is quite poorly!

Sorry, had to do work stuff... you're probably on the way to hospital by now - fingers crossed the test is negative and you have to bring him back and feed him ORS for a couple of days!

let us know, will be thinking of you x

4gotoindia · 27/03/2009 10:07

Probably too late - but know a blood test can quickly rule out dengue. (As my daughter had one y'day for the same reason).
Goodluck!
Mrs 4gotoindia

stuffitllama · 27/03/2009 10:45

Mrs4 I'm so sorry about your daughter -- how was it? Are you waiting for results?

dh at the hospital now fingers crossed

OP posts:
4gotoindia · 27/03/2009 11:58

Hope all is fine with your son. Do you have good access to decent medical care? (Not sure where you are)
All fine with my daughter... she has a mild chest infection. But were worried as couldn't get her temp down. Got blood test results within 20 mins (private not-very-clean hospital in small-town india)... as it was late at night, and there were hardly any other patients around. Showed that whatever it was that might be raised in teh case of Dengue fever, was not raised... and so not Dengue. She has been much much better today... but I've had same infection, with ear infection, and my ear drum burst as a result. So feeling pretty sorry for myself!

SuperBunny · 27/03/2009 16:28

Hope there is good news Stuffit and that he is much better.

stuffitllama · 27/03/2009 18:46

It's a throat infection v severe and tonsillitis. Yes we do Mrs 4, and he is loaded up with drugs which is not hugely my bag but he's so white and lumpy inside his mouth dh is putting his foot down.

I can't believe I didn't see that before. I was convinced it was dengue and so glad he went to the hospital -- tbh if we hadn't been going away this w/e we might not have because the treatment is just rest and fluids anyway. But he really needs these abs I think.

Thank you, thank you mango and mrs 4 x
and night Bunny x

Oh thank goodness it is nothing more scary. I hope the ABs sort it out very quickly. Have a good weekend, stuffit

mangolassi · 28/03/2009 05:39

Glad to see this - not that severe tonsilitis is much fun . At least you know. hope he's feeling better soon.
