I shall be going out on my own tonight for the first time since November 2005.

I am going to an International Evening in my small town where everyone will speak mostly German. It is a women only night and not only will I walk in knowing NOBODY but I also have to cook food for it AND perform something, ie. poem, dance, song.

I am terrified but this is the best chance I have of finding someone who might speak English. Maybe I will even make a friend and I won't feel so lonely.

As a quiet and shy person I am throwing myself in at the deep end. DH can't believe I am actually going to do it!!!

MmeLindt, you have me spraying tea over the keyboard with your jokes!

I am a very shy person, but once I feel comfortable or confident, can really let myself go and be the life and soul. I do hope that happens tonight.

I remember last November being in the Kinderartzin with DS2. I was talking to him in German, to fit in, like. There was this other lady there with her daughter. She then spoke to her...in English! She was Australian!! She then picked up her daughter and went into once of the consulting rooms before I could say anything. It was a crashing feeling, so be so close to having someone to chat easily with and for the door to be shut on that opportunity. Maybe she will be there tonight!

But, you do speak German? Have you made any German friends?

abroadandmisunderstood · 20/03/2009 09:52

I speak some German. Still having lessons when DH is actually here.

I have no German friends. I say Hi to all the mums when I drop off DS1 at Kindergarten.

There are two mums that can speak English, but mostly speak German. They are not, however, German, so it is stilted and difficult to talk freely. I can't, you know, chat...

You could do the absolutely beautiful Walter Scott poem, or you could do this Australian festive season classic

WARNING: It's unbelievably obscene. Don't open it if you're at work or you have kiddies within earshot.

How did it go?
