when you move back to the UK can you transfer them or do you end up with a bit of a pension in that other country and the rest in the UK? In our case we've made contributions in both Germany and France whilst working there year ago and are now in the UK and are just wondering what on earth we should do otherwise our UK pension will be smaller than it would otherwise have been. Any thoughts on the point or ideas on where to get advice on this (that won't cost more than the pension!) much appreciated.

If you were paying into the German system for less than 5 yrs, you should be able to get your contributions transferred back. Otherwise, a few (hundred weight) forms and you will have a nice small German pension to look forward to in the future ?!
