My son is really into stamp collecting, and is fascinated by stamps from other countries.

Would any kind MN from abroad be willing to send him a postcard?

If anyone would be able to do this can you email me at

Polarcub - received your email and have dug out 'spares' album, does your ds want british stamps too? or only foreign ones?
and would he want any duplicates for him to swap with others? or just one of each?
Some of the british ones i've got are 'old' ones - pre-decimalisation, like '3d' etc.?

will get a pack together later depending on his preferences...

WelliesAndPyjamas · 18/09/2008 12:24

Postcard on its way now. I never got to see the stamp though (woman behind counter stuck it on and put it in the post bag herself) so hope it's not too boring.

PolarCub · 18/09/2008 13:23

Othersideofthechannel Have emailed you again

justkeepswimming ooo British stamps are good too - he'd be fascinated with the pre-decimalisation. We don't know anyone else who collects stamps, so have no-one to swap with.

WelliesAndPyjamas Thank you

right, have gone through and got one of any i've got duplicates of.
Will pop to post box later, so hopefully they'll get to you sat?
there are lots - was tempted to send them in order but resisted - half the fun is laying them all out on the table or floor and sorting them isn't it?
Hope he has a big album, if not best go shopping soon! (Whsmith have good ones)

there are also a couple of odd ones to start of historical/geographical discussions - rhodesia, kenya-uganda joint stamps, etc.

enjoy

Othersideofthechannel · 18/09/2008 18:13

Got it!

justkeepswimming · 18/09/2008 18:35

posted before last collection so may even reach you tomorrow

PolarCub · 19/09/2008 13:00

justkeepswimming The stamps have just arrived. Thank you so much, there are lots & lots of lovely ones
We've just had a great discussion on pre-decimalisation - we Home Ed
He's just off to start filling his new album, and you're right half the fun is sorting them

Am getting geography questions yelled at me now

Thanks again

Would you like some from Kenya?

PolarCub · 19/09/2008 17:25

Themasterandmargarits That would be lovely if you could email me please

Califrau Thank you. Actually I never realised that's how the Americans do it. Thinking about it - you never see postboxes in American movies either

OP posts:
justkeepswimming · 19/09/2008 18:17

do you know Cali - that makes perfect sense to me

i have been bemoaning the lack of 21st century thinking by the PO, think about it - we nearly all drive most places but can you post a letter from a car window? no, you have to find the postbox, park (prob illegally as most of them are on corners/by shops with busy parking), get out, round the other side, post letter, etc.
imagine if they put lower down boxes at window height in special lay-bys that you could pull into.....

ah well, vent over!

Othersideofthechannel · 19/09/2008 22:01

Califrau, you used to be able to do that in France until recently.

PolarCub · 20/09/2008 11:07

I've had another couple of people email me so we also have postcards coming from Kenya and New Zealand

OP posts:
PolarCub · 26/09/2008 16:16

A very big thank you to you lovely ladies who have sent us postcards and extra stamps.

I'm sorry I haven't replied earlier - my computer's been down as it had caught a virus (or two, or three!!) and has not been very well I'm still trying to reconstruct my data and have lost emails ...sigh..

We have received from:
Califrau from the US
WelliesAndPyjamas from Bosnia
othersideofthechannel from France and extra stamps
One from Spain and New Zealand - I'm sorry I can't remember your Mumsnet names and my emails are lost, so please forgive me for not thanking you personally

The lady from New Zealand - you must be a mind reader. My son loves volcanoes and was very delighted to receive a postcard with a volcano on it and information about them. The extra stamps are lovely as well.

Thank you for your very lovely postcards

PC - once your DS has sorted all the MN stamps, have a look here for more to keep him busy.

I have ordered one set which should arrive this week so will let you know, felt a bit dubious, 100 stamps, £1, no p&p? but will see...
(sure for REAL stamp collectors they're probably worthless ones but hey that's never stopped me in the past !)

oh, and if i get any duplicates, will post them on to you

whiteflame · 30/09/2008 23:44

Hi Polarcub, glad he enjoyed them both! Good luck...

ninedragons · 01/10/2008 04:42

It may be worth popping into the From Our Own Correspondent thread and posting a link to this one. There are Mumsnetters all over the world, and that thread has become Expat Hangout.

WelliesAndPyjamas · 02/10/2008 15:20

Glad it got there ok

In case it is of inerest, here's a link to the English page of the Bosnian post office, and it has a list of places you can buy stamps for collections (incl one place in UK).

PolarCub · 04/10/2008 19:30

WelliesAndPyjamas thanks for the links

Well, looks like at some point in the future I'm going to have to ask the lovely people here to resend their postcards if at all possible.
Our flat has been flooded and virtually everything has been destroyed. On Wednesday morning we had a mains water pipe burst in the attic. It has flooded three floors. We've been decanted to a hotel and have been trying to see what, if anything of our belongings can be saved. Luckily the stamps that had been sent to my son, he had taken to his Granny's house - so they are safe!
Having slightly recovered from the shock, I have now remembered my Mumsnet login, and am using the internet at my Dad's house.

OP posts:
JustKeepSwimming · 05/10/2008 06:01

oh PC - that's awful
Glad some things were at granny's and hope you have good insurance to replace everything else?
Very upsetting i'm sure

Sorting through more of my crap stuff here and have more stamps to send, do you want them posted now or wait a bit?
Oh and that £1 guy on ebay was fab, quick postage of 100 odd stamps, v useful for random collectors (like me!).

Themasterandmargaritas · 07/10/2008 16:46

Oh dear PC how dreadful. I do hope some things are salvageable. I'm not sure if our postcard arrived (from Kenya) but if not I am happy to send again plus extra stamps...

desertgirl · 07/10/2008 19:20

polar cub, likewise, thinking of you; hope you can rescue lots of things. Must be a very tough time for you both. Will it at least be covered by insurance?

If the Dubai pc doesn't show up (at some point, blimmin erratic mail) I will be very happy to send again....

PolarCub · 23/11/2008 21:48

At last we are home after a hellish time with the flood. We are slowing putting our life back together
Basically our flat (and the two flats below us) have been rebuilt. All that survived were the outside walls, and one bedroom in our property. I'm very lucky that it was my sons bedroom that survived. I've spent the last month fighting with the council (who own the property) and the workmen. We've still got some way to go, but we have walls, ceilings, floors, decoration and a kind of function home

I would be very, very grateful if people could resend their postcards

If you can email me at polar underscore cub underscore hugz at hotmail dot com

OP posts:
JustKeepSwimming · 25/11/2008 07:22

Do you want a small bundle of mixed ones again?
Not as big as last time sorry.

Hope things improve from here on
