Possible move to Vancouver, British Columbia

My hubby has a possibility of a job offer in Vancouver - I've done a little research, well as much as you can via the t'interweb, but just wanted some insider info.

I realise Vancouver is very expensive to rent or buy, but which areas are good for families with young children, we have a ds (5y) and dd (8m).

Anything anyone can add would be much appreciated.

TIA xx

where is your sis?

purpleduck · 09/09/2008 10:01

Hi!
My sister is in Didsbury, which is about an hour north of Calgary. The system works a bit differently than here, so even if you just need some advice...

Romy7 · 09/09/2008 10:05

we've got a condo in canmore and a lovely realtor there
going to look up didsbury now - no idea where that is, but if it's an hour north of calgary it's v close... we'd be looking two hours south of calgary this time i think
where are you then? in blighty i assume as it's a weird old time to be mning if you're over there?!

Romy7 · 09/09/2008 10:10

found it! an hour due north and we're an hour (ish) due west. looks lovely!

purpleduck · 09/09/2008 10:35

I am in Hampshire

I don't know about "lovely" - its where I grew up, so I can't imagine being back there - I break out in a cold sweat thinking about it - but it definatly has some good points.
The house prices are falling there too.

So, was your dh in the forces... (sorry i'm sure it must say somewhere above...)

Romy7 · 09/09/2008 10:46

still is... (we have it stamped on our foreheads lol) but he's been having interviews etc etc... we're waiting for the outcome of recent job discussions (now looks like next weds is final decision point)...
so maybe not for much longer... although at this rate we'll probably still be serving and waiting for the canadian queues to go down when we're 90!

purpleduck · 09/09/2008 10:56

My dh was in the forces too - thats how we met. We are constantly being asked "What on earth are you doing HERE!!!"

Romy7 · 09/09/2008 11:00

when did he leave? i still can't work out how on earth you make a decision where to settle after trawling round the world for so long. did you stay where you were when he left or did you stick a pin in a map of the uk? we'd like to think we've made a decision where to go, but it's never that simple, is it?! they still might not want us lol... and goodness only knows how we'd choose in the uk!
or did you fall in love with leafy hampshire and refuse to go anywhere else?

purpleduck · 09/09/2008 11:41

Well...we didn't really choose i guess..

I was in Canada - visiting, and dh just called up and said "I signed off today". He was so fed up with being messed around. So we did just stay in the area where we were last posted, but this is where all the jobs were in dh's new field. And we really like it here too

He has just taken a job where he works mostly from home, and it has "released" us a bit I guess. We both still get itchy feet, and would love and adventure. We do think of going back to Canada "just for a few years", but DH and DS both love snow/skiing/snowboarding...I am scared we would never come back!

Romy7 · 09/09/2008 12:45

you're not one of my neighbours are you?
what's dh's line of work?

purpleduck · 09/09/2008 13:38

LOL!
He works for a mobile phone company -he used to be a tels tech

Romy7 · 09/09/2008 14:23

does he work for nokia?
you might be my neighbour

purpleduck · 09/09/2008 16:07

No, he works for Ericsson

Romy7 · 09/09/2008 17:44

ah. probably half an hour in it then

Romy7 · 24/09/2008 13:36

hello if anyone's still around on this thread - just thought i'd update that we're still doing nothing, and still waiting, but, wait for it, he has yet another chat with the company tomorrow - he's over there for a couple of weeks working again and they've actually called him. we've had a couple of calls to check he is still interested whilst they make their minds up, but other than that, nada.
i think i'm losing the will to be enthusiastic about the possibility of him working for this company at all

AlwaysTheMummy · 01/10/2008 21:49

I'm so sorry Romy, I completely forgot about this thread, I've kinda become obsessed with british expats lol, it's fantastic.

Sorry to hear you're no closer to a decision, but at least they haven't said no.

Do you go on british expats a lot, if so whats your username, I would probably stand more of a chance catching up with you there xx

still haven't got any further lol. they claim he will know definitely one way or another by the end of next week. think there is a legal issue as there may be a canadian that they don't want but may tick the 'essentials' box...
i'd rather not post as it's close to rl, but if yours is a nickname, post it here and i'll pm you on expats. if not, cat me here and i'll let you know.
bit paranoid i know, but i'd rather no-one was able to link up my whole web life lol...

AlwaysTheMummy · 02/10/2008 19:18

no probs, mine is DSLJFreeman, see you at the other side xx
