Mine would really love to go I think and are probably the right age now. I'm just not sure if I could face it.

OK what would you rather:

watch a whole Rosamunde Pilcher film to the end

or endure an evening of Volksmusik?

Turning off the TV is not an option unless you forgo MNet for a month.

SSSandy2 · 09/07/2008 11:05

Hi hupa ,congratulations on the win!

I need to know , is Heino going to be in the Volksmusik show? If so, I'd have to go for Rosamunde Pilcher, but only with salt and vinegar crisps

Legoland looks good. I'm sure the dc will enjoy it. I have to admit that I do try and get out of these funparks abut dh has taken dd to Legoland Denmark many times and they both say it's great. Dd in particular liked baking "cowboy bread" there over and open fire. You can get quite wet though, so some kind of rainjacket, cape thing would be a good idea, whatever the weather is like.

I could sit through the film with the crisps and maybe some wine but I couldn't get through more than 5 minutes of the Volksmusik.

I have a big problem: just went to get some more boxes out of the cellar with ds. He was all brave and laughing at me oh mum I'm not scared of spiders. We opened the door and a massive monster spider was hanging across the entrance to our part. Then I noticed an even bigger monster spider trying to get back into the cellar from the garden so we managed to get it scared off with a tennis bat and then quickly closed the door and ran back upstairs. This is a real dilema because I can not get my boxes out. I'm not being a wimp, they were really really big fat bodied spiders - know the type I mean? I can't kill them -I am a wimp in that aspect.

SSSandy2 · 09/07/2008 11:14

Oh yuk admylin. Have you got something you could spray them with and then go back when they're dead?

Thanks for your email. It's great. I'll write back tonight when I've had a think

OP posts:
SSSandy2 · 09/07/2008 11:19

could you wear hats and hit the one/the cobweb holding the one above the door with a racquet or a broom so it falls down and then use that instrument to flip it away from the door? Then maybe just be really fast getting the boxes out?

OP posts:
admylin · 09/07/2008 11:21

Yes, good idea should I go and buy one of those insect sprays? Do they exist for spiders? I've seen ant and mosqito sprays. Last night we managed to get 3 boxes out and ds got them and threw them on the grass and I brished them then the 3rd one had a big spider in and what looked like the shell of it's 'egg' whatever it was born out of. So I wasn't expecting this to be easy! We took the 3 boxes up and left them outside the door to our flat and I had to have a quick shower because I felt all itchy and spidered on! And ds isn't laughing or being brave anymore.

admylin · 09/07/2008 11:22

mosquito and brushed that should read, I'm all itchy again!

SSSandy2 · 09/07/2008 11:23

spiders are vile

Can't find my spray now, wondering if it is in the garage. When I found ants traipsing through dd's bedroom I went to Bauhaus and they had quite a selection of different sprays and things. I should think there would be something for spiders.

This topic should put Hupa off her Streuselkuchen! Well done tackling the kitchen

taipo · 09/07/2008 11:25

Oh no admylin. I hate those big fat spiders that live in cellars. I wonder what it is that makes them so big.

I think I'd have to go for RP too with plenty of wine. I don't know heino but I did watch some hansi hinterseer once. I was too mesmorized by the schmalz factor to turn it off. To be fair though I haven't met any Germans under 50 who would listen to the stuff.

SSSandy2 · 09/07/2008 11:34

know him of course, he's a Happy Harry, isn't he? Then there's Stefanie who is I think married to some other Volksmusiktyp - is he called Stefan?

You have to know Heino, (dark sunglasses, peroxide blonde) here you go:
sing mit Heino for instance

SSSandy2 · 09/07/2008 11:38

actually I know they had a VOlksmusik concert here in Berlin one summer and everyone thought : What?! Volksmusik in Berlin?! In actual fact it was booked out. I think more people like it than admit to it.

Funny thing was when I first came, I felt uneasy watching TV hosts, news broadcasters etc because I felt they didn't smile enough and it felt all wrong. Whereas I always feel they smile TOO MUCH on those Volksmusik shows.

OP posts:
admylin · 09/07/2008 11:56

I know what you mean about being mesmorized by the schmalz factor - it's one of those things you only find out about Germany when you actually live here isn't it, like the shop keepers being so unfriendly, you'd just never have imagined it to be possible. It's sort of kept a secret abroad. I know there is big big money in being a volksmusiker so there must be alot of people buying it.

taipo · 09/07/2008 12:12

Ah, so that's Heino. Now I remember that there was a question about the lyrics to one of his songs on 'Wer wird Millionar?'. The whole audience was singing along.

The whiteness of the teeth of VM stars is truly scary imo. Surely these cannot be real.

taipo · 09/07/2008 12:40

I would have thought Berliners had more taste quite frankly. Another illusion shattered.

SSSandy2 · 09/07/2008 13:01

well it doesn't go wtih the image Berlin has, so I was quite surprised too taipo. I am sure they all have their teeth done, like everyone in the media spotlight. Maybe that's why they smile more - get their money's worth!

There's a lot of rubbish sung in English though when you think about it, isn't there? Often enough the performers actually can't sing properly whereas at least these Volksmusik performers seem to have the mechanics of it. I don't when does a song sung in German become Volksmusik and when is it just a song.

It's just all a bit kitschy and fake to my eyes but like yu say admylin, they do it because there's a lot of money in it.

Quite a few foreigners in that Volksmusik scene too , aren't there? What about that black man from Cuba who's quite old now. What's his name? You know the one I mean

OP posts:
SSSandy2 · 09/07/2008 13:05

I found him:

roberto blanco

So if our books don't sell, we could go on and try it as a Volksmusik band?

whilst I'm playing around looking for people found this video of Elvis:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1Ond-OwgU8

Looks so young which probably means I'm OLD. Was trying to explain to dd why they called him Elvis the Pelvis but she didn't think much of my demonstration. Just sort of gave a very doubtful look and said, mummy, I'm sure Elvis never danced like that. She loves Elvis atm, keeps belting out "it's alright, mama..."

Can't see the old pelvis wiggle on there though, but didn't they film him from the hip up when he got going anyway?

You have been having interesting discussions. Cheesecake and volksmusik!

I have to say that I love British cheesecake with the crumbly biscuit base. We used to love making that as children.

Heino is very strange looking isn't he? We saw him in Bad Muenstereifel, his hometown a few months ago. He is just as cheesy and plastic looking as he appears on TV. He did smile nicely at the DCs though.

We arrived in Scotland today, flight was fine. DS even fell asleep. They are running around at the moment.

We are looking for 2nd hand bikes at the moment, for leaving here. It is so difficult as they are different sizes to in Germany. Anyone know what size of bike we need for DCs 100 - 110 cm tall?

Argh, Mum has a British keyboard and I keep pressing the wrong keys.

SSandy
Oh, your poor DH. Has he forgiven you yet?

Hupa
Viel Spass in Legoland tomorrow. Is that the new one in Duisburg? Or the one in Schwabenland?

SSSandy2 · 10/07/2008 09:39

dh is not back till tonight ML so I have to beaver away today. Not sure about the bikes tbh. Do any of the neighbours have dc your age? Otherwise how about going to a bike shop to get the sizes sorted, then you know what you're looking for second-hand.

Does anyone here know where you can buy APfeldicksaft? I'm wondering what it is actually - apple juice concentrate maybe? I have this new recipe for Holländischer Apfelkuchen which sounds nice but I have never had to use Apfeldicksaft before when I have made this type of thing and I don't know what it is.

admylin · 10/07/2008 09:43

Couldn't get those Elvis songs out of my head yesterday! He was good looking too wasn't he in his youth!

So MmeLindt tell us all the things you've been tucking into back home? I usually pig-out on everything I've missed the first week and then go back to trying to be good! Must admit though there are so many things I've missed eating that I sometimes need more than a week to get through them all. My sister told me she bought a 24 inch bike for her 9 year old who is small for her age but I didn't realize it wasn't the same as a 24 Zoll in Germany. We usually manage to borrow bikes as sister has so many nieces and nephews on her h's side.

admylin · 10/07/2008 09:44

Ooh that sounds risky SSSandy, don't make him a birthday cake with a recipe you've never used before - especially not after having forgotten the first time round!

SSSandy2 · 10/07/2008 11:11

I've lost the recipe I had. It was just written on a piece of paper and stuffed inot a recipe book... Have to go and buy some ingredients now, wish me luck finding this Apfeldicksaft stuff whatever it is!

Elvis was gorgeous, wasn't he? All sultry looking, tossing his black hair off his face, nice voice too.

admylin · 10/07/2008 11:15

My first French boyfriend had a touch of the Elvis look!

I thought that you would have finishe dmaking your cake by now! Good luck with the Apfeldicksaft, I've never heard of it - definately don't bother trying in Plus or Lidl or the likes - best bet would be a healthfood type supermarket or Kaiser.
