Moving family to Malaysia

I’ve been offered a job in Malaysia. I’ve always wanted to emigrate, I find the UK weather so miserable and despair at the general state of the country to be honest. We have a two year old child and don’t have family support here. Have some friends but they all live far away and the cost of housing means we can’t really live where we want in the UK anyway. I do love my current job but it’s a bit boring and frustrating.

I’ve been offered a job, less flexibility, but the same money. We have extended family in Malaysia but no solid ties there. I’ve travelled there extensively so do know it and like it.

How on earth do I make this decision in the next few days? Has anyone had experience living there with a young family? We’d be able to afford international school. We’re not really the ‘professional’ businessy type people - a bit more bohemian (!) would we be able to find a community?

I’m so torn.

“You’ve been offered a job and have always wanted to emigrate”. So do it. You can’t base life on “what ifs” you are living in the now. I emigrated alone 7 years ago (no children) to Thailand I live very rurally nearest big town is 35 km away.

You say you ‘know Malaysia as you have travelled there extensively that’s an advantage. What you must consider are the medical facilities especially having a little one so do your research. Medical Insurance? You haven’t said how long the job is for so you may or may not have to consider schooling. If the job is long term then again research Education. Look into that International school you have mentioned and more importantly look into those fees. Consider other schooling options.

Your cost of living will be better in Malaysia as you have stated you are on the same money so your money will go further. It’s not difficult finding accommodation throughout Asia and in most places it’s cheap. Bills are also cheap so long as you are careful. In my opinion this could be a once in a lifetime opportunity for you so grab the bull by the horns and do it. If you do emigrate I don’t think you will have any problems socially, bohemian or not you will find your place and do the things you all really want to do.

Asia offers up so many other opportunities especially for both travel and work. I mean just look at all the countries close to Malaysia I don’t know what you do for a living but if it’s something to do with the teaching profession then wow you really do have opportunities abound. For me it’s a no brainer.
