I'm sorry if I'm just being incredibly dense here but I wondered if anyone can recommend an website where I can buy something online in America and have it sent to my friend's house in the US?

I have already done the Amazon e-voucher thing and would much rather send a more tangible gift this time.
Any suggestions very gratefully received.

TIA

What category of thing were you thinking of? There are loads of ordinary shops, such as Target and Walmart, that have an online service.

Ok, maybe I need to also start a thread in geeky stuff but if I pay by credit card do most cards charge an exchange fee if not buying in your home currency?

Would paypal sites be a better option?

Sorry for all the questions.

credit cards usually charge the visa wholesale exchange rate plus 1%, which is often better than you'll get at a bureau/bank for changing cash. paypal just charges your card in the foreign currency too, so isn't any better.

any us website should do, as long as they deliver to addresses that aren't the cardholder's (not all sites do that)

toysrus.com

clothing - gap.com

everything in general - amazon.com (they take foreign cards); target.com

book store gift card - barnes & noble

craft stuff -- michaels.com

lots of personalized stuff and other stuff (great site! have ordered from them many times in the past) - lillianvernon.com

hope that gives you some ideas...
