Hi, I’ve lived in Spain for over 10 years, for many reasons I’ve had enough and want to return to UK.

would like to hear from others in a similar situation.

Hi natura, I am in exactly the same situation as you and have the same feelings about going 'home' although i will always love it here in Spain. I'm thinking about leaving in a couple of months. Did you move back to the UK? Do you have any tips on what ends to tie up here before leaving?

If you return to the U.K., and no longer have any assets in Spain, what happens to your Spanish will ( also having a U.K. Will to cover your assets in the UK as advised) which was made to cover assets in Spain? Is it just considered redundant?

So to update - I moved back to UK bought a house and so glad I did it.

The problem now is that my partner still works and lives in Spain.

Oh wow. It's not often you see an update a year later.

I was reading with interest as I've been thinking the grass is greener in Spain. I had been mentally weighing up if I would ever feel a true sense of belonging and if I'd want to move "home" as I aged.

Where did you move back to?

My SIL lives in Spain and has for 30 years since graduating. She runs her own business now working mainly on behalf of the super rich. The sort that own yachts that cost millions. Don’t think she will ever move back but she comes back to the UK at least once a month with her business. She despises the UK weather. We will be having extended holidays in Spain from next year, the 12 week max unfortunately due to Brexit.

Thanks for the update OP. Glad it’s worked out (aside from partner).

Hi I moved to the south wales coast, It was important for me to have easy access to sea and mountains.

I would have considered moving to another part of Spain, but my partner is focused in Ibiza.

i like Spain, but I can’t help but think that for me it’s a place to go on holiday but not to live, I guess a lot of it was where I lived ie small expensive island in remote rural north. I also didn’t have the most supportive partner who was and is a workaholic.

i feel I’ve done the right thing.

im not sure what this means for our relationship - he will not consider living in UK but will visit.

I know what you mean and I’ve thought about that, I’ve looked a lot at the Alicante area along the Mediterranean coast, whilst the area is beautiful and cost of living would be lower than where I am now I still can’t help but think it’s a place to go on holiday but not live. Lots of foreigners there coming and going, but I’d like a community rather than just being somewhere where people are transient like where I am now. Also, there isn’t much work in the mainland.

if u know of a nice area can you recommend?

I have older relatives in the Mazarron area, they have a great ex Pat community there even though they've only lived there two years and are always busy. They can fly from Alicante or Murcia.

I can second the Costa Calida / Mazarron area, lived here for 12 years , large and active British and Irish community.

As long as you're happy now. South Wales sounds like a very good choice. 👍

I often wonder how much a life in the Sun lives up to the idea of it.

I have lived in a few places , Catalonia south of Barcelona, the Basque country, the pyranees honestly I have lived in remote places too. Not my cup of tea.

I would go for weekends away and suss out other places. Britain is a shit show and while you can be out for 5 years without closing your residency I think you'd regret it
