Desperate ! How do you find nice greetings cards when you live in a non-anglophone country? I really need a good one for my Mum

Usually I buy one ahead of time when I'm in the UK but forgot this year. All the greetings cards in France are naff in the extreme, it's Tuesday already and I'm desperate.

What do you all do?

World Vision do brilliant alternative cards. You pick a present such as a goat or a sewing kit, then you can choose a card. They have Mother's Day ones. They are not at all naff and they will post them direct to the recipient.

Have a look www.greatgifts.org/GiftCertificateSelection/GiftCertificateList.aspx?OccasionID=7&Occasion=Mother's% 20Day

A blank one and write your own message? Or get the kid(s) to make one? Or buy some nice cardboard and make one yourself? If there is an art shop you can buy some stick on embellishmnets, but otherwise ribbon, glitter pens and a couple fo nice pics out of a magazine, with some glitter bordered around it should make a reasonable job. Go for hte less is more though if it si one of your creations. Kids - anything goes....

purpleduck · 25/02/2008 16:13

Hey, I'll mail an english one to you if you like

There is a company that sends you an assortment of cards in the post every month or so, depending on what you want - can't think of the name... don't know if they do overseas tho.

I think its called "cards for every occasion"

But seriously, I would be happy to send you one

Have you tried
Moonpig ?

PurplePillow · 25/02/2008 16:15

It must be a purple thing, I was just going to offer to send one to you as well!

PestoMonster · 25/02/2008 16:15

Jinx!! TillyScoutsMum

Just noticed the gifts on that link are quite expensive - if you go by price you can get a mosquito net for £5. Then click to design a card (not an e-card) and it's included in the price .

castille · 25/02/2008 16:28

Ooh you lovely purple people! I don't think there's time for you to buy and post, and for me to write and repost now though

Moonpig - will investigate... same time problem maybe though

World Vision sounds fab. I've already organised a present or I'd do that, it's just the sort of thing she'd appreciate. But will def keep it for future occasions.

I wish I was more creative. Sadly I am not blessed in that department so wouldn't dare sending one I'd made for fear of insulting my lovely Mum! Kids said, rightly that much as they love her, "we can't do it, she's not our mummy"! They have a point...

Cut the front off an old one; or a great picture out of a magazine and stick to card.

purpleduck · 25/02/2008 16:39

Ohhh, write her a lovely letter, with all your lovely mother/daughter memories (if you have that kind of relationship)

Yay for Purple power!!

Othersideofthechannel · 25/02/2008 20:08

But Castille, she's their grandma, so why can't they make one?

You could do a personalised card by uploading a photo on the web site of laposte.

Always imagined you were in mainland France. It's still Monday where I am.

chrissi1 · 25/02/2008 20:36

What about a nice family photo on a card??

DualCycloneCod · 25/02/2008 20:41

moonpig

castille · 25/02/2008 21:05

Is it still Monday? It's the school hols, have totally lost track

The children make cards for grandparents all the time, but I've always done mothers day for my mother. They make things for me for French mothers day, both at school and secretly at home, so they are a bit at me getting them to my daughterly duties!

Photo chez La Poste is a good idea (if I can find/take a decent pic!)

Moonpig keeps crashing on me

Oh, I assumed it was her birthday.
Is it mother's day already in the UK? I haven't been paying attention.
You've got an extra day to sort it now

escape · 27/02/2008 06:25
